As Megan pushed the door forward, the automatic lights came on, and her breath hitched ever so slightly at the sudden change.
She regretted everything instantly.
It hit her all at once; the lights and smell, and that familiar weight growing in the back of her head. It all reminded her of why she hated this sport.
She hated the smell of sweaty feet and the bright white lights that bore into her soul. She hated having to drag an oversized, heavy bag into a fencing club when she could be living a normal, 19 year old life. She hated waking up at 5:00 every morning just because someone thought she was slacking and told her she had to run.
But most of all, she hated this feeling.
The feeling when she could feel the fear of messing up seeping into her mind, the pressure of not disappointing her mom slowly crushing her heart, and the weight of losing that made her body feel heavy. It’s what compelled her to arrive early to the club every morning to get in extra practice.
Not the drive to be the best. Not because she loved the rush of adrenaline from winning a bout. Not even because she wanted to show off to people.
But because the feeling of being a failure was stronger than she was.
