There was a strange tightness in her chest when Vivi’s eyes fell on her in the almost-darkness, with the smell of her home around her and the sky melting into the sea. It was all too easy to imagine they were sitting among different trees on an island so very far away. Maybe that’s what led her to keep talking past the pleasantries. Maybe that’s why she told her about her mom and her sister and an old man she never called dad but wished she had.

Stiles hasn’t seen Derek Hale this close up for over a decade. He looks almost exactly the same, except somehow he seems even bigger and broodier—criminally handsome, with soft-looking dark scruff, heavy brows, light hazel eyes. His gaze zeros in on Stiles almost immediately, and his scowl lightens minutely in what looks like surprise.
Stiles is acutely aware that he has melted butter and cinnamon all over his face, and tries to surreptitiously wipe it with the ends of his sweater-sleeve.

“I-I’m sorry, I was looking for the shelter?” The Omega’s voice comes out with a squeak as the man notices he’s staring down the barrel of Bucky’s rifle.
Bucky notices his scent immediately. Omega. Exhaustion. Panic. He lets the shotgun sink.
“You missed by half a mile.“ Bucky watches the shoulders slump, then wince as lightning brightens the sky, followed by an ear-splitting roll of thunder.
The bundle in the man’s arms starts whimpering.
“I think you should stay here.”

At twenty-one, he watches on the news as New York is half-destroyed. Aliens. Who knew.
They--the Avengers, people say--fight like a proper pack. It’s interesting. Loki’s never belonged anywhere, and he won’t belong in a fight.
(He only holds his breath when he sees Stark fly through the portal. There’s time, but there won’t be if Stark dies before Loki bothers to meet him.)
Stark doesn’t die.
Loki eats a spoonful of half-melted ice cream, closing his eyes.
