Maybe it was meant to end like this? At least he won't be torn apart by pack of lickers or eaten alive by horde of the undead, at least that was something positive. At least he wasn't a rotting corpse mindlessly walking in the darkness searching for something living he could attack and tear it's insides out of it's body like a hungry animal, rip it apart and feed on it. At least he's not laying on a dirty concrete floor with detached head, chest cut open and rearranged guts on display.
