Summary
Daryl-
I’ve spent most of my life surviving instead of living. I work the grill at Martha’s diner, keep my head down, and hide what’s left of my heart behind a sharp mouth and a bad temper. I know better than to love anybody, especially the straight cop whose mistake nearly got me beat to death.Rick-
I’m a King County detective trying to hold together a difficult job, a complicated marriage, and a life that has not turned out the way I planned. After a failure on the job put a guarded, stoic man in the hospital, I started seeking him out for reasons even I didn’t fully understand. After nearly a year, he finally started to let me in.This is the second in the King County Hearts series. It continues the brief interactions between Rick and Daryl in the first story, Protect and Serve. I recommend reading Protect and Serve first to establish the tentative friendship between Rick and Daryl and to become familiar with Shane and Emily. It can be read as a standalone, but some references will be unfamiliar.
Their relationship here begins as a close acquaintanceship but no established intimacy or romance.

Summary
In the past two years, they've worked through every menu item at the American Diner, most of them twice. Sophia won honorable mention for her catapult at her school's science fair. Carol's taking classes over at Dalton State, thirty credits into her associate's. Daryl is content to watch them both, a glow and a buzz in his chest every time he sees how high they can go. He's accepted, two years in, that he's theirs. And they're his. Their own little, cobbled-together family.
And he's not letting anybody take that away from them.

Summary
The next truck eased into view, and Rick immediately noticed the difference.
No glittering paint job. No flame decals. No grinning skulls. Just matte black from hood to tailgate, the kind of black that seemed to swallow the light around it. The panels were scuffed and dented, some welded seams visible even from the stands, like old scars that had been patched over just enough to keep moving.
“The Reaper!” the announcer called out, voice briefly lifting before sliding into the next introduction as if this one wasn’t worth lingering on. No flashy stats, no hype about the driver - just the name, dropped like a stone into the noise.
But something about it caught Rick and held him.
It wasn’t trying to be the loudest in the room. It didn’t need to be. Every inch of it looked like it had earned its place here, not been polished into it. A working beast, not a show pony. It looked like it had been through hell and kept going.

Shane drags Rick to a monster truck rally to "shake the dust off" his post-divorce life . Rick expects noise, chaos, and a headache. Instead, he finds himself captivated by The Reaper - and the quiet mechanic who takes care of it.
