Zosia moves very well on court, and her slide on the clay is divine. Carol is kind of envious about it. She hits the ball hard and flat. After every stroke, she makes the racket sound heavenly, and with every stroke she grunts, and she grunts loudly. Carol’s eyes open wide at her discovery, and a warmth rises and settles in the lower part of her body that vibrates every time she hears Zosia’s grunts.
Must be the alcohol, yep. There’s not way—
Another grunt.
“Oh god” Carol says
She should, to the very least, dislike Zosia. She’s young, she’s healthy and she’s incredibly talented. She should hate her, because she’s standing in the way of Carol winning another Slam again.

“What?” Carol’s hands fell from her bag. “You – what?”
Zosia smiled, teeth on display now. “I want you as my advisor next year. Like I said, I have been waiting for this class the entirety of my time here. I don't want anyone else claiming you before I do.”
So, Carol was fine. She was fine and the fact that she repeated that constantly, a mantra in her head, probably should have raised some red flags, but it didn't.
She published her books under her pen name, taught at the university, and did not let an unhinged graduate student blow up her life. Just for the fuck of it, it seemed like.
