Summary
When Raizel gazed out his window in Lukedonia, things were always changing. The birds, the trees, the sky, they all gradually changed under his quiet vigil. Now when he looked out at the world he could see that far more had changed than he ever anticipated. Humans had come far in 820 years.
820 years. Raizel frowned at the number. His race may have been an old one, but even to them that wasn’t exactly a small amount of time. To think the fight with Muzuka had put him to sleep for so long. From the hollow feeling in his chest he had the sinking impression it wasn’t long enough.

Summary
“Why?” M-21 cried. He couldn't make sense of it. He was a failed experiment, it was all anyone called him for as long as he could remember. Every scientist he saw made sure to take every opportunity to remind him of that fact.
"Because you deserve a chance to live," Raizel said simply. "You're not a failure. M-21 is M-21. What you are depends on you. The Union might have started your story but you will be the one to finish it."
A warmth spread in his chest at the notion that Raizel had gambled his life for the chance that M-21 might do something with his. And yet that statement didn't sit right. "And you don't?" He demanded.
Raizel paused a second too long for comfort.

Summary
Physics class felt exceptionally long today. On a normal day Raizel's eyes would swim at all the various symbols and he'd have trouble following along. Today he'd zoned out through the entire lesson. It wasn't that he intentionally wanted to ignore the teacher, especially not when Frankenstein brought them together just for him. But today concentrating on much of anything was an absolute impossibility.
His wings ached. They were truly, terribly, dreadfully aching and he simply couldn't deal, as the kids would say.

Summary
The next moment her brother does something Nat finds strange: he raises a fist up to his chest and he rubs small circles over it one, two, three times then just rests it there over his ribcage, lingering.
Equally strange is how Syd seems to not only understand the gesture, but repeats it back to him, then the pair just stare silently at one another, having another wordless conversation only the two of them are privy to.
Suddenly, Nat feels as if she is seeing something she’s not supposed to, like she’s intruding. She feels like she should look away, but she’s too intrigued by this discovery she’s stumbled upon to do so.

Or: Five times Nat suspects there might be something going on between Sydney and her brother, and one time she knows for sure.

"We're okay?"
"We're okay."
"We're back?"
"We're back." Though she knows nothing of what they're back to, what it means to be back with each other, or that they had even owned a time in their relation that they'd call a 'back' (she knows what it could mean; she knows its core-meaning, all despite).
