“Chance would be a fine thing,” Alex responds, a dreamy look on his face when Greg turns back. Alex winks at him and Greg’s stomach twists in answer.

Still, Horne, a tall beta man despite his “little” moniker, is something of a stickler for rules. This character trait juxtaposes pleasingly with the extravagant capriciousness of that most alpha of alphas, the Taskmaster himself, played by Greg Davies. The dynamic between the two works most effectively as, of course, we are all hanging on the pleasure of the Taskmaster, who treats everyone with the same cruel disaffection regardless of career, secondary or primary gender, or ability. “It works because nobody expects it of him,” says Horne, “But I think everyone likes that, secretly. That alpha urge to be mean, to be nasty. It’s very satisfying to watch. To participate in.”

And the completely unneeded reminder that as he approached 60, his vision remained stubbornly black and white. All because he hadn’t met his alleged soulmate.
It was an old hurt now, more a twinge than a pain. Greg knew all the statistics, knew that the number of those without soulmates climbed each year. He knew he wasn’t alone by any stretch, and he mostly meant what he said when he told particularly nosy journalists that he had no intention of looking for his soulmate at his advanced and decrepit age.
That didn’t mean he had to enjoy the reminder.
