"Surgery is a sort of dance.
It requires grace to do it well. Balance. Precision. Weaving around one another in time to the rhythm of— not music, but a patient's beating heart. A squeeze on the hand in the dance hall might mean, get ready to be dipped. In the operating room, pass me the forceps.
If surgery is a dance, he and Hawkeye make excellent partners.
Which is all to say, he can't understand why it is that Hawkeye refuses to actually dance with him. That night in the O-Club, nor any night, for that matter."
Or, BJ learns, perhaps, why it is Hawkeye won't ever accept his offers to dance. Which he's not upset about at all, because he's only asking as a joke (of course).

Hawk regarded him with a slip of a smile. “Oh yeah? Then how ‘bout one of these, instead?” He tugged BJ in and kissed him, slow and sweet.

In 1955 Hawkeye and BJ bridge three thousand miles of distance and find a way to build a life together.
Though this takes place after YTIMTIOT (and is a series of extras), it should be possible to read each chapter as a standalone short story (or skip some, or read out of order). They'll post once a month for the Year of the 4077th event.

“You don’t have to smile at me,” Hawkeye says after a fourteen hour shift capped off with a letter from Peg about Gus-the-banker who fixed her overdraft fees last week. Hawk’s antsy and angry and as tense as a twice-haired cat. Charles is out who-knows-where. “I know the truth, Hunnicutt, and your golden boy act is bombing in the here and now. Metaphorically.”
(BJ and Hawkeye argue about volcanoes, Korea, and feelings—in that order.)
