Louis returned the smile politely.
“Rather like yourself,” went on Lestat. “Running from something?”
“Excuse me?”
“Everyone who comes to Auvergne is,” Lestat fixed him with a knowing smile. “The mountains are excellent at keeping secrets.”
Louis has a university education and no experience in dealing with children. That doesn't stop him from traveling thousands of miles, to Auvergne, to become Claudia de Lioncourt's new live-in governor.

Louis came to the church for help after his mother blamed him for his brother’s death. After hearing Louis’s confession, the priest not only failed to help him but also accused him. With no support, his brother gone, lonely and afraid, Louis decided to end his own life as well. The attempt failed, and he lost his mind. With his heart and mind shattered, furious at the whole world and hating himself, Louis resolved to live exactly as he pleased — even if it meant doing terrible things. He had nothing left to lose. He wanted to challenge the world and finally take what he wanted.
Or Louis bought himself a wife.

Summary
Lestat is…he doesn’t know. A late quarter-life crisis, maybe, or a very early middle-life one. A way to satisfy a curiosity he didn’t know he had until he met Lestat. A distraction from a boring marriage or a way to generate some excitement in what had become an easy life.
Louis can't decide which is more accurate, and it was making the whole thing all the more exciting and all the more disturbing.
