Summary
The knock at the door startled Ellie out of her spiraling thoughts, and she cleared her throat, tired from disuse, just long enough to fire a “Go away, Joel!” at the door.
After heading back to St. Mary's, Ellie wanted nothing to do with him. She hadn't been able to look him in the eye.
The door opened despite her wishes, and the visitor proved to be a lot shorter and, well, girlier than Joel. “Guess again.” Dina deadpanned, waltzing inside.OR
Dina comes to check on Ellie after she disappears for a week to search for answers about what really happened at St. Mary's.

Summary
Ellie is not a people person.
Traveling with an introverted, grumpy old man for one long, exhausting year will do that to anyone. Not that she would have preferred to be with any other asshole, though. If she had been with Tommy instead, or Marlene, or some rag-tag armada of Fireflies, she'd probably kick them to the dust and escape into the woods or something. Throughout their hellish cross-country adventure into the vast fungus-ridden land, pieces of her chipped away, one by one, like a shitty paint job on a couch that cracks and separates because you used acrylic on fabric.
Or,
The progression of Ellie and Dina's relationship, from each pivotal development start to finish (with an unreasonable amount of context to boot)

Summary
"What made you grow up?" Dina asks her, after swapping silly stories with Jesse. It's meant to be light. It's meant to be sweet. They were sixteen and playing at being adults — it was her turn to play pretend, now.
But Ellie was a creature made of violence, and nothing about her was anything but soaked in blood.

Summary
“I think I - fucked up my ankle.” She points to her left foot. “When I fell.”
Her remorse lies thick and rank between them. Joel imagines he can see it rotting there, in between shafts of honeyed sunlight. Shame, he thinks, fits her so poorly. He’s reminded of Kansas City, of her sitting her with her back to the newspaper lined window, chin on her knees, a single tear on her cheek as she tells him:
It wasn’t my first time.
Little girls, he thinks, have no business carrying that sort of regret. He has no business reading into it this way - thinking about all the tender spots Ellie’s got lying in ruin inside of her, all of the ways this world has failed her. All of the ways he’s failed her, all of the ways he might still. She’s only a job, he tells himself sternly. She’s cargo.

Joel patches Ellie up again, and again, and again.
