Summary
Cloud didn't mean to get into fights. He just hated the look of judgement that flashed in their eyes. He wondered how many citations it would take to get him kicked out of Shinra's Cadet program, it was apparently more than he had already racked up. While he was physically gifted, Cloud struggled with his classes; Standard was his second language. Maybe with some guidance from Zack, he'd be able to make as a SOLDIER after all. A jealous rival will use every advantage to put Zack Fair in his place, and the Cadet seems like the perfect target.
Cloud meets Zack in the cadet SOLDIER program, who helps him become a promising candidate for a new type of Mako Infusion.

If this were a different story, Zack thinks, he would be using his last moments to remember kind, green eyes and a sweet smile. He would be staring out into the raining sky, life running out of him, while making peace with the fact that he would never see his first love again. If this were a different story, Zack would not be left empty-handed, crying out as his friend stumbles away into the remnants of a battlefield. He would not be praying for that blond head to turn, aching to capture the final sight of a cherished face before locking it behind two lids.
No, this does not feel like a fitting end to this story at all―and Zack overflows with the one childish thought that this is unbearably unfair. In the rare moments that he, as any soldier must, contemplated his death, he never imagined that he would die alone.

Summary

Summary
Six months pass just like that. It’s funny how some people you’ve met a thousand times and still can’t remember their names. Others are like Jackie, sticking to you like melted sugar, or a song you can’t get out of your head. Meeting him shifts the tempo of V’s life, moves everything up to 2x speed. It’s like he was just biding his time before then. Sitting around, waiting for things to happen. Wondering why they didn’t.
