    thunderbolts, everyone’s shame rooms

    “We all go. We face it together or none of us are going to make it out. That’s it. That’s what He is, the Void.”

    A creature Bucky knew all too well.

    The others stared silently for a breathless moment. Bucky could see the fear. He recognized it. It was the creature that had darkened his days ever since he came in from the cold. But he had faced the Void already, a hundred times. And if the world was going to keep any light in it, he would have to face it again. But he knew he wasn’t going to make it through alone.

    “We all go. Together.”

    The Real Bucky clenches his flesh hand in his metal one, back against the wall, reminding himself over and over that this is The Void, the past, not the truth. Not his life. Not anymore.

    Ava makes a broken sound and turns to face the concrete, closing her eyes. Alexei stands utterly still and stares, and Walker sinks down to sit next to Bucky, silent and stoic, and looking at his hands instead of the horror in front of them.

    Hollowly, Bucky watches it unfold. Because there’s nothing else to do. Because The Void wanted this. The Void knew that this was the one place he hasn’t been able to let Sam or Dr. Raynor or even Steve go.

    It’s Sam’s voice that finds him there. Because it’s always been Sam’s voice.

    You want to climb out of that hell you’re in, do the work.

    He thinks of Louisiana, of the sunset over the Bayou on a warm evening, with Sarah at the grill and Cas and AJ running laps around Sam. He thinks of laughter and light and goodness, of Steve’s smile, of the grasslands of Wakanda, of the brief period after the Battle with Thanos, when the world was full of miraculous joy and he had everything he could ever ask for.

    He thinks, even, of the angry young woman who is somewhere in this Void—who dove into the darkness after a man she barely knew, all to save a world that had given up on her. He looks at John and Alexei and Ava, these misfits, and he sees them there, with him, in this. They do not watch his shame unfold, but nor do they flee from it. They are in here with him. And even if they’re just about the last people he would want to walk through this with, the truth is that he is not alone. And that’s enough.

    When he pulled the door open he was waiting to see Barnes resting in bed, pale and frail, maybe his hands trembling as he reaches to give John a handshake after they both pretend it did not mean anything he jumped in front of a literal fucking train to save him.
    What Walker did not wait for was Bucky half naked and the two hands gabbing his ass under the thin hospital gown.

    OR, Bucky gets injured during the divorce, Walker calls Sam.

    Walker was not a leader, Bucky in the ground slumped without life was just like Lemar, he was back in front of his best friend’s parents, lying to them. Promising he had made right by Lemar’s life.

    There was no way he could do it again.

    It was Yelena who ended up taking over the lead, Ava following her orders as John gape, catatonic.

    Bob curled an arm around Bucky, carrying his weight even though Walker was the strongest of them.

    Bucky had become more accessible as of late.

    Buck nodded, he was still clenching his jaw. It surprised John to see him reaching over, laying a hand over Sam’s hand, intertwining their fingers. “I do trust you. I am not good at this. But I try, alright? The AvengerZ bull shit? Not me. You should know that.”

    “You know it wasn’t what pissed me off. You chose to get out of the field, to not work with me to then work with him, that fucking pissed me off.” He didn’t even look at Walker who was absorbing the interaction almost with gleam. Sam Fucking Wilson jealous of him. Of Walker who had lost the trust of the girl that fell in love with him before he lost his baby teeth. Had ruined and lost everything. Sam had Bucky, Bucky had Sam and Lemar was fucking dead . Olivia hated his guts and he had not being able to stare at his sons eyes in moths without feeling nauseous and bubbling with something deeply uncomfratable. Guilt. Waves that came in flashes as Lemar's laugh in his dreams. He thinks of Steve. Of Sam stubborn devotion, Bucky deflective enfutation. “That you waited a week to call me after you die--”

    “I was scared.” Finally, he confesses, “I was fucked up because they saw my memories of me being terrified of you making me happy. Memories that were hunting me and it was just me being in love with you. I was mortified, Sam. I did not know it was getting so bad--I--In my mind. How I felt for you. It felt too on the face and then you wouldn’t even pick up your phone, Sam. I went to your place, to Sarah's, I called you from every single thing I could find for months, dude. Come on, now, what the hell do you want?”

    “Have you ever said sorry?” Walker offers.

    Sam doesn’t look away from Buck but the latter glares at him. Then he seems to think about, turns red, looks at Sam, “Ah,”

    Sam just waits.

    “Yeah. I mean. Okay.” He swallows. “I am not sorry for helping them without calling you. And I’m not sorry for trying to get out of the field for a while. Honestly, I’m not sure we are supposed to do field work together. I never fucked with that roman shit of fight next to the love of you life. We may fight better together but I--I don’t want that for us. I want us outside the field. So I’m not sorry for--”

    “Dude, literally you are meant to do the opposite of this--”

    “Shut up, Walker.” Buck wet his lips. “But I am sorry for not calling you afterwards. For not saying I was scared before.”

    Sam smiles a little. Then gives up, breathing thru his nose and making gestures with his hand.“ I was right. But I’m sorry for acting like a bitch.”

    “Right.” He sighs. “Well, things are a little more complicated than helping stop a terrorist group together while being a dick to him, then breaking his arm.”

    Yelena stares at him. “You broke his arm?”

    “It wasn't just me,” Bucky says defensively. “Sam was there, too.”

    “That doesn’t make it okay. Or better.” Yelena pauses for a second, looking as if she was considering something. “I understand the urge to hit him, but breaking his arm seems a little excessive.”

    “But, it’s not that simple!” Bucky waves his hands in front of him, like he’s trying to ward off an attack that he knows is coming. As much as they argue, Yelena has always been oddly protective of John. “We got to know each other- I got to know him- and I kind of… fell in love with him,” he admits, turning his face away from her and trying not to blush.

    Silence greets his confession. Then, “What?”

    Bucky shrugs. “He’s funny- a lot of times without meaning to be, but he’s sharp too- and awkward, he knows his way around power tools, and he’s caring. God, he cares so fucking much. About everything. Protecting people, doing the right thing, what the public thinks of him. He just wanted to help people, but I didn’t want to see that and I pushed him. Tried to make him angry, because I was angry, and when he finally did break, I shoved it in his face, beat him up, and left him on a dirty warehouse floor.”

    Yelena stares at him. “Hoo, okay, there is a lot to unpack here.”

    A pained laugh escapes Bucky. “I’m aware.”

    “And he let you into his house after all that?”

    Bucky looks down at his hands again, unaware of the faint smile curving his lips. He’s twisting his fingers together again. This time, he doesn’t stop them. “Yeah. Like I said, he’s a good guy.”

    “I know that.” Yelena stares across the short distance at him. “I knew that when he teamed up with his would-be killer to get out of a hole they’d all been sent to die in. He was an asshole, but he did his best to protect us all.” She settles back into the couch again, this time kicking her shoes off and tucking her feet up in front of her. “So, you barge into his home, demand a place to stay, he lets you and you get to know him, and then you sleep with him? Do I have that right?”

    John looks away as hurt washes over him anew. “What’s the point of this conversation exactly? To point out all the ways I’m not Steve-fucking-Rogers again?” He’s so tired of the comparison, and his temper briefly flares. He’s not Steve. John is well aware of that. He’s not Sam either, and he’s well aware of that, too.

    “No!” Bucky strides swiftly around the island, planting himself directly in front of John. “I’m trying to tell you that you got it all wrong, that first time.” He reaches a hand up, but stops just short of actually touching John. “I’m trying to tell you I don’t love you because of the ways you remind me Steve.” He takes a deep breath. “I love you for all the ways you’re not like him at all. I love you for being you,” he says quietly. “It was never about Steve for me. It was always you.”

    “Oh Pride! That’ll be fun! I was a go-go dancer at one of the main stages for a few years. I’ll have to get some new short shorts.” John was ready to go as always. Bucky and Yelena turned to look at him. “What? I got rid of my old ones, and they wouldn’t fit anyway.” He shrugged.

    “It’s the go-go dancer bit.” Yelena clarified.

    “I was young and in good shape and not heterosexual. I made some good tips!”

    “Fair I guess.” She conceded and John continued without being prompted.

    “Being at least a little bisexual is a Captain America prerequisite at this point. You can’t tell me Steve wasn’t?” Bucky shrugged in agreement. “AND whatever you and Sam have going on.”
