Summary
One of the first stories Sabo hears in the Grey Terminal is about the Terror. According to the old beggars gathered around their campfires and willing to indulge a little boy too curious for his own good, the beast isn’t all that large, but wicked fast, and deadly with spine and claw.
After a couple of weeks spent sleeping in a nest of trash some three miles or so from the Great Gate, Sabo gets a real look at the Terror.
It’s... small.

Summary
Call it any number of things, fate, luck, sheer fucking coincidence, but he’s in the right place at the right time to catch someone hollering about Gold Roger’s son being put up for sale.
Even if it’s all a pack of lies, no kid deserves the fate that’s coming from being a look-alike with Roger. Shanks finds his feet moving of their own accord, the whole world narrowing to just this thin, insipid man, beaming from ear to ear as he talks about an auction for a child.
“What,” Shanks drawls in his best ‘Saint Fearsome Figarland’ voice, “Is this nonsense?”

The video goes online four days after the crash.
“Warning: Pilot Ejection Advised.”
“Not while we’re still over the city, no- can’t risk this thing blowing up and landing on top of civilians. Maintain cruising altitude, calculate shortest route to minimal population area.”
“Altitude Locked - Calculating.”
For a moment, just a split second, Mecha Man visibly hesitates. Then, he switches hands, keeping the flight controls steady while reaching for a panel on the other side of the cockpit. A faint chime sounds, followed by a ringtone. Three repetitions. A voice speaks, too faintly to be heard over the wind, then a louder beep.
“Hey, buddy,” Mecha Man says, gaze locked onto the viewscreen in front of him, almost directly at the camera recording all of this. “Don’t think I’m going to be able to make it to dinner this weekend after all, sorry."

Summary
The man was in a suit that almost reminded Robert of something from Cirque du Soleil, all skin-tight, shimmering fabric with bursts of red and orange and a V-neck that showed a lot more than neck. The wrap-around sunglasses didn’t even look that ridiculous.
Infuriatingly, he managed to be beautiful, like a Monet in an Ikea frame is beautiful. He had changed very little in the years since Robert first encountered him, at least physically. Robert couldn’t say the same.

“He with you?” the bouncer asks, head tilted up to look at Flambae. There’s a lot of emphasis on that “with”, and Robert can feel his face beginning to heat up. Was Flambae even in the room when they talked about this? Or is he about to be mortified into the next week by a classic Flambae dressing-down at the mere possibility of him dating someone like Robert?
But then the heat in his face is joined by another, external source of warmth when a firm arm slips around his waist, and he’s gently tugged to Flambae’s side. “Yeah,” Flambae says, without hesitation. “Is that a problem?”

Summary
When Mandy yawned, Robert turned his head slightly, watching her out of the corner of his eye, exhaustion lingering in his expression. Despite the painful effort it took to speak with the definitely broken ribs, he asked, “Could I walk you home?”
Mandy looked Robert up and down, and then actually laughed at that, her eyes crinkling up around the edges, blue eyes reflecting the sunlight. Robert felt his heart tighten, although it wasn’t out of shame or embarrassment. She wasn’t laughing at him.
“How about I walk you home?” Mandy offered instead, rolling her shoulders back in a half shrug. Her lips were still pulled into a soft smile. “I think you need it more than I do.”

Summary
In which we explore some of the off-screen time between game scenes. Team bonding, dispatching, character studies, and various donuts eaten while on the job. Focus is mostly platonic and team-dynamics because I really really want more screen time with the other members of Z-Team... but I am also an action and angst writer, so buckle up. Not ACTUALLY writing a non-romantic Robert so much as Robert who is too fucking exhausted to do anything about, like, dating in Season 1? Something like that. The one-sided crushes go fucking HARD tho.

“And don’t throw mud at me, Golem. I can see you.”
Golem lowers his mud-flinging arm and Flambae clicks his tongue in disappointment. Robert shoots a warning glare over his shoulder and turns on the shower. Golem turns away as Rob starts to pull the towel loose at his waist and settles in to focus on his filtering. After a while, he does clock Flambae looking side-long at Robert from his place on the opposite divider wall. It’s not… a pervy stare exactly, but it goes on too long to be idle curiosity.
Golem flings mud at him instead.
“Goddammit, Golem!”

Chase turns to glare at the three members of the Z-Team currently present. “Any of you fucks hurt him, and I will fucking gut all of you and mount your heads on fucking spikes over my goddamn desk. Got it? Kid might be a soft touch, but I’m not.” Prism and Flambae roll their eyes in disturbing unison. Sonar salutes him, because the bat is the only one on the team with half a brain. “Now, I’m going to go back to my desk and repress this entire fucking conversation.”
There’s a message from Galen waiting for him on his computer when he gets back. It just reads, Condolences.
Chase sets his forehead down on the edge of his desk with a groan.
