    Summary

His thoughts wouldn’t stay still. That was the worst part. They bounced around in his head, all day, all night. He tried to drown himself, in alcohol, in pills, in men. And then he’d wake up in the morning and the thoughts would be back and he’d skip breakfast. Breakfast was for losers.

    Heed the tags—intense. So good.

“Have you heard from Zack recently?”
Black void in his head, now. Nothing, or too much, thoughts so dense they collapsed in on each other. Wasn’t sure if he answered or just hummed something non-committal. His chest felt so tight. He needed to hit something. Or make a shitload of money, somehow, right now.

“Brad…” David sighing, getting up now. Didn’t like that. Definitely didn’t like it when he sat down on the edge of his desk. Didn’t like being looked down on. Didn’t like the way he couldn’t tear his eyes from David’s. Didn’t like being looked at like that. With pity.
“Just because you’ve put up all these walls doesn’t mean I can’t tell when something’s wrong,” David continued. “I don’t know what’s going on in there, but I can see the big red flags, okay?”
He couldn’t answer. Fuck walls. He was going to build himself a vault.

Hands shaking again. Dug his nails in his palms again. “You don’t understand.”
“Then explain it to me! How am I supposed to know what I’ve done wrong if you don’t tell me?”
“Because I don’t want you to fucking know, David!” His voice was too loud, too shrill. He saw several people outside their office look in their direction. Lowered his voice, keeping it steady this time. “Because it’s none of your fucking business. You don’t need to know the why. You just need to shut the fuck up.”

He stalked the corridors, aimless, not sure where he was or was going to. The sharp pain in his temples intensified. He was gonna puke, or pass out, probably pass out, because there was nothing in his system he could throw up. Couldn’t remember the last time he had eaten—but that was a lie, that was something he’d say to Jo, to cover up the fact that he couldn’t forget, never stopped thinking about it. Vividly remembered the last time he had eaten. Knew he shouldn’t have. So fucking stupid. Where was the bathroom?

“It’s just—Zack said something about you being ins—” David stopped himself “—about you watching your weight, and Jo says you never have lunch, and I don’t—I’m not saying—I just thought, maybe it would be easier if there was someone with you.”
Thought about this. He didn’t want to see anyone, didn’t want them to see him, not like this—but David had already seen him break and his house was so empty and he kept glancing down at the knife and he dug his nails into his palms and—
    “Okay.”

Who was he, if he couldn’t do what was obviously the right move? How did anything he’d done since he was a kid matter, if he couldn’t sacrifice MQ? All the money he’d made. All the people he’d used. The power he’d acquired. How did any of that matter if he still couldn’t kill the pig?

"Up the stairs. Taking off your shoes. Throwing a parking ticket in the kitchen bin. Taking a shower, washing well that worn-out skin you had to wear to work. Washing these tiresome expressions you make to make them tolerate you. To make sure they do just that, no more, no less. Rubbing comfort into these sore muscles. A cup of coffee, because it was always such a pleasure for you. And a kids’ show, perhaps, since there’s solace in that. The sacred comfort of being truly, immensely, alone."

Brad cursed at himself for the coffee. He cursed himself for letting Zach win again. For him being stupid enough, weak enough, fearful enough, to let Zach swoop in. To ever tell him he got the job, to ever tell him that he liked it, to ever tell him the pig’s name.

    “Is that all, Jo?”
“No. I didn’t want to suggest that in the morning, because he’s your brother, but if it will be needed, I know people who know how to make other people disappear.”
“No!” he said with a voice way too charged, cringing for a second and moving on, “Jo, I appreciate the initiative, but please do not ever suggest murder to me as a solution.”
“It’s not murder! He’ll just disappear. Like ‘oh gee, I wonder what happened to him, he was here and poof! He’s not here anymore! That is soooooooo strange.’ But nevermind, I won’t do that.”

“You didn't hide it very well. Awful combination, by the way, but that's not the point.”

Brad blinks. There’s an adjustment period, just a millisecond. He shifts in his seat and digs his fingernails into his palm just a little bit. Jo notices, now that she knows it's there, hidden away. Jo notices because it's a look she always hated seeing in the mirror.

“Well, you told me you’d want the proposal to be public-“
    “What proposal?"
Brad slowly steps back. He looks as though he thinks David lost his mind, and frankly, David is beginning to think so, too.
“You mentioned- last week- you’d like a public proposal - I, I thought –the mail-“ David stutters.
“That was me, actually.” Jo steps forward. ”I sent these mails from Brad’s account.”

David publicly asks Brad out and suffers the consequences.

    Bookmarker's Notes

    :(((

David isn’t sure if he is more jealous of Jo, for getting Brad to look and talk to her with such gentleness, or of Brad for getting the intimidating assistant to respect him so much, something David never did manage to do.
David just felt completely alone, at times. He had no siblings growing up, and his parents were too busy arguing over who gets to have the antique lamp to talk to him. Back in school he had few friends, and he got the nagging feeling that they just tolerated him. At work he thinks he has Sue, perhaps, but she seemed to be closer with Paul and Carol nowadays. He was her boss after all. Sometimes, David wondered if he had no real qualities that could be lovable. Maybe he was too old, too unattractive, too pathetic for anyone to love him. His parents loved him, certainly, just not enough to not get divorced. And his wife loved him too – just not enough to not leave him. And he learned to be fine with that, most times.

Little by little, David let himself fall for him. He let himself get lost in Brad's brown eyes, even though when they were twinkling with mirth it was mostly at his expense. David let himself appreciate his smiles, even though they almost never meant good news. He wanted to find a proof that it wasn’t all in his head, he had to.

“David, take a deep breath and make your words loud and clear. What on earth are you talking about?” Brad says, gently, as if talking to a small child. His tone is more softer than he’d ever heard in entire time of working with him. It distresses David greatly.

    Summary

Brad looked down, then back at her. He was fully aware how he looked. He stared into enough mirrors during his breakdowns to know his eyes looked tired, his skin was grayer, and bags under his eyes more visible. He looked broken. Husk of a man. Someone who was moments from bursting into tears.

    “Jo. Don’t kill our game.”

She straightened her head, her piercing gaze staring right through him. “Beg me.”

    Bookmarker's Notes

He fell asleep, eventually. He wasn’t sure when, and it wasn’t what he planned to do, but it happened. The next morning, he woke up to a rumble and voices, as well as someone banging at the door.
“Brad- Brad! Brad, are you in there?”, he stood up, not even bothering to check his hair or straighten his sweater or even make it seem like he didn’t just spend an entire night in office just because some kid from work decided she liked his brother more than him. When he opened the door, he was met with David – who didn’t waste a second before frowning.
He looked him up and down, his frown deepening. “Brad, you- you look like shit?”

“Whatever he promised you is a lie.”, Brad said, his voice growing desperate. “That’s what he does Jo. He manipulates, lies, he doesn’t care about you.”
“I know.”, she said, like it was obvious.
