Stiles slouched in a rickety chair in the cramped lobby right outside the principal's office. The receptionist shot him a friendly grin.
"What’s the trouble?" she joked, her laughter filling the space.
Stiles just shrugged, fidgeting a bit and feeling a bit on edge.
"Just messing with you," she said, her tone light. "I doubt it's anything serious. You’ve barely even settled in!"
Just then, the receptionist’s phone buzzed, cutting through the moment. She picked up, said a few words he couldn’t catch, and then hung up.
“Principal Hale is ready for you,” she said, her tone cheerful. “Just head on in; no need to knock.”
