Nick’s voice often made her stomach do a little swoop, especially when he said her name. This was bad, because her totally platonic roommate’s voice wasn’t supposed to make her stomach swoop or flip or give her butterflies or feel any kind of way. Especially especially not the voice of this totally platonic roommate, the one who she was constantly finding in some sort of state—usually not a good one. This moment was no exception. Nick was sitting on the floor of their living room, sleeves rolled up, in the center of what to Jess looked like (but certainly couldn’t have been) the aftermath of an extremely localized tornado. Couch cushions had been lifted off of couches, drawers had been opened and emptied, contents of bookshelves removed and stacked haphazardly on the floor, a basket of Jess’s yarn upturned.
