Summary
“What are you talking about?” Grace's fingers played quick chords as he spoke. He didn’t even look as he did it, but it did not make them any less purposeful.
“Discussing possible reasons why Tau Ceti is not infected while other stars are,” Eva replied deftly. “I would invite you to join, but we were just finishing—”
“Oh, that’s easy.” His hand twisted a knob, and the notes came out sharper. “It is infected—Petrova Line and everything.”
In Grace's opinion, dreaming about time traveling is no excuse for getting out of practice with his Eridian. To the rest of the Petrova Taskforce, it seems a bit odd that their resident Astrophage expert has suddenly taken to carrying a keyboard around and playing it whenever he speaks. Eva Stratt resolves to figure out what is going on.

“All right, then,” she said. “Congratulations on your promotion, Dr. Grace.”
He blinked. “Promotion?”
“To the primary crew of the Hail Mary,” she clarified.

Eva liked to think that she savored fruit these days—in a decade or two, it would likely be hard to come by, after all—but she was sure that it was nothing compared to how Grace acted. His shoulders shook with his breath as he slowly chewed the fruit piece, and his eyes flashed in the light, wet.
-
I personally am of the belief that Grace and Rocky are each other's Person (tm). They are soulmates, your honor. Love need not be defined by words that try to constrict it. Read it however you like lol.

Finally, he said, “Someone is supposed to watch him sleep, Stratt. I have to… He needs someone to watch.”Oh. That was different from what she was expecting
-
She let out a small breath. “Very well. We will take this outside.”
-
“Pardon?” Redell asked. “‘Where you’ve been?’ The hell is that supposed to mean?”“It’s where I’ve been,” Grace repeated unhelpfully. Eva wondered how viable an option it was to strangle her primary science specialist.
-
“Oh, give me a break,” Lokken said, gesturing emphatically at the screen. “Life can’t exist there! It’s too close to its star, there’s no way—”“I told you the Goldilocks Zone was for idiots!” Grace grinned widely.
“Don’t you start!” Lokken pointed a stern finger at him.
-
“So, that myth. You learn that from that alien best friend of yours?”Grace scrunched his nose. “What? Of course not, I learned that from Adrian—they grew up with those myths, still believe in ‘em.” He shook his head. “No, Rocky’s an atheist.”
Eva was exhausted.

Ms. Stratt clarifies that Valeria was the one to break her out of prison. The Russian woman grins sharply at me, and says, “My little sister liked her. Who was I to leave her rotting away when she can be doing more work out here?”
-
That is the sort of person that the fate of the world has been placed in: someone merciful. Someone kind. Someone who, in the face of the worst the universe has to offer, shows grace.
-
“Stupid bones losing density and muscles atrophying,” he hissed as they went. “Learn to exist without gravity for a bit, you losers.”
-
A sound like hissing—like air filtering rapidly through an airlock.“I am the Commander of our mission.”
Louder bangs again—more akin to thumps now—coming closer and closer and closer—
“My name is—”
New notes. They were not like the keyboard. Rather, they were like an instrument she had never heard before. Like a whale song, perhaps.
The laptop registered them anyway.
Softly, it said, “Grace.”
-
The Eridian jolted, and then let out a sound so devastating it made her heart ache. Somewhere within the wail, Grace’s name played again as the alien threw himself at their commander.Grace caught him instantly, and the two flipped through the air for a moment before Rocky managed to grab onto a handhold and stop them.
“Grace, Grace, Grace!” The laptop declared.
“Oh, my God, Rocky!” Grace sobbed, wrapping his arms around the alien’s body without hesitation.
-
“Not like we don’t have every soundtrack ever made onboard,” Grace said, and Yao nodded in acknowledgement. Later that afternoon, when Olesya stumbled across him working out or the like, it was to the tune of different Undertale bosses.
-
“Yao, what are you up to?”“Marking our territory,” Yao replied, and she glanced at his corner of the screen to see a massive statue of a woman facing the rising sun. It was impeccably detailed.
“Huh,” she said. “Cool.”
-
“Build giant Adrian,” he stated. “Big, big, big.”“Adrian is literally just about your size,” Grace said. He was still deep in the mines, filling two shulker boxes with the redstone that Rocky had demanded.
“Big because they deserve,” Rocky insisted.
“I would be honored to help you construct a giant statue of Adrian,” Yao said sagely.
“Good, good. Will help with whatever you want after.”
“Oh, wonderful.” The corners of Yao’s eyes always crinkled when he smiled wide enough. Olesya liked that about him. “I was hoping to build something in the sky—inspired by the dragon.”
-
There was a thump behind him. Grace blanched in time with Olesya’s heart sinking and Yao sucking in a breath. Slowly, Grace turned around. The tilting of his body revealed Rocky—standing there in a xenonite suit decorated with little dangling decorations. His entire body was taut, just as Grace’s was. The air was cold, seeping into her very bones. -

That's how he begins to see people dressed differently than before. He sees servants dressed like people of the court, he sees closeted people finally representing as themselves, he sees his wife with an eternal crown over her head.
And then he sees a man walking into his rooms. His face held high, his eyes golden. His face and hands are scarred all over and Arthur knows it's emotional scars. But the man glows, his clothes that worthy of a king, no. A god.
Only when the man opens his mouth and pulls away the curtains, does it dawn on Arthur whose in front of him.

“I think I need to start charging people to ask me stupid questions.” Merlin mused, letting his head fall back off the couch, effectively hanging upside down.
“What you need is a rich himbo.” Gwaine declared and Merlin opened an eye to peer at him curiously.
“What?”
“For your questions tax.” Gwaine explained.
“Hmm, I don’t know, I mean, first of all, where would I even find a rich person? And Secondly, obviously, fuck the rich.”
“That might be fun.” Gwaine said, grinning.
“That is not an instruction you idiot.”
“Not with that attitude.”

Summary
Modern Day Zombie Apocalypse AU.
Grantaire is managing by himself when he accidentally joins a group of students striving for mutual survival. There is angst, art, requited and unrequited love. Also a lot of zombies.
The title comes not from Javert's song 'Stars' in the musical, but from the Wilfred Owen poem 'But I was Looking At The Permanent Stars'. A longer explanation of why is available if anyone cares to hear it.

'I didn't hear it,' snapped Enjolras. 'That doesn't mean I'm incapable - '
'Well, I'm sorry you're deaf,' Grantaire began, and in the same breath Enjolras responded, 'Good, because I am.'
A sudden silence fell. Grantaire wondered how he had survived this long with such inept social skills, and whether jumping from a fifth floor window would kill him or just break both his legs.
-
'There were too many. I couldn't stop them,' Gavroche, having seen his world torn into shreds around him.Gavroche. Éponine's head snapped up and she jerked away from Combeferre's embrace. Her brother was standing next to Courfeyrac. For once, his cocky demeanor was nowhere to be seen: Gavroche was wide-eyed and shaking like a leaf. A smear of red decorated his face from his cheek to his hairline and he looked exhausted, but he was upright and alive.
-
With the resigned air of one who lost all dignity long ago, Bossuet picked himself up off the floor. 'Grantaire,' he said. 'And Marius, and this hot girl - I don't know her name.''You have a boyfriend,' said Combeferre drily.
-
For a guy who failed to notice how Courfeyrac hung on his every word, he was good at deciphering romantic scenarios.'Ah,' he said. 'Are you all right?'
She shook her head.
-
Everybody complied at his or her own pace, one after another like the world's worse Mexican wave. Last to decide were the girls. Cosette was waiting for Éponine, and Éponine was chewing her lip and contemplating her brother. Gavroche was going all-out on the puppy eyes, which couldn't have helped the situation.
-
'All right,' she said slowly, lifting her hand skywards. 'I'm in.'Gavroche let out a hiss of satisfaction, and Cosette's hand quickly followed suit.

“Oh that was so a ‘we’, Byers.” Steve clapped a hand over his heart as he leaned back and laughed.
“What was? What’s going on?”

“Because you told us!” Eddie cut in, pointing at Argyle with two wiggling pointer fingers.
“I’m so confused.” Jonathan sighed, holding his head in both hands.

Summary
Mike is expecting somewhat of a reaction. A look of disbelief. A laugh at the very least. Instead, not-Mike just shrugs. Everyone looks at him as if he just announced that the grass is green.
"And?" says Wyllan when the silence stretches, as if he's not sure if Mike's dramatic pause is going to lead somewhere by itself. Mike chews on his lip.
"I don't know?" he says. "I guess now my brain is hallucinating before shutting off?"
Wyllan arches a brow. His next words, however, are not unkind.
"Was it your first time?"
"First time for what?"
"Dying."
Mike wakes up in a forest that shouldn't exist, surrounded by almost familiar faces and a version of himself he doesn't recognise. He's pretty sure he's dead. The others have a solution for that.

after the events of this story, Mike toys with the idea of going vegetarian, and somehow that manages to piss off Ted Wheeler more than the fact that his son has fallen in love with a boy
-
"That's amazing," he says, and sounds like he means it. "But is it dan—""Why are there two of them?"
Mike turns. The second figure has risen from his crate. Long black hair falls almost to his waist, and his eyes move back and forth between Mike and not-Mike with the expression of someone wondering if his vision is deceiving him.
"Oh, hi, Argyll," says not-Mike, cheerfully.
-
The birdsong carries light, and this time Mike finds something almost comforting in the thought that it belongs to somewhere Mike also belongs too."Jon?" Mike says.
Jon looks like he's somewhere else entirely. "Yeah?"
"What kind of bird is it?"
Jon blinks at him, uncertain. Listens carefully.
"What bird?" he asks.
-
"I was saving those for Midsummer," Argyll announces bitterly, apparently not done grieving. "Do you know what Midsummer tastes like without it? Nothing. It tastes like nothing."
-
the fic is tagged Grief/Mourning largely because of the sacrifices Argyle has to make in this chapter
-
"Not to compliment Michael—" Lucan says."Betrayal," says Max without skipping a beat.
-
As they walk, Max turns to look at not-Mike, a gleeful, sinister smile on her lips."Excited to see Annis, Michael?"
"Fuck off," snaps not-Mike grimly from where he trails at the back of their little procession.
-
"Is she your ex or something?" asks Mike, because apparently not-Mike has been racking up a track record in places Mike hasn't even gotten started. Everyone snorts except for not-Mike, who produces a very dramatic retching motion at the suggestion.
-
"It's never easy with you, is it?" mutters Stevan under his breath."You love us for that," coos Dusteen. Stevan scoffs.
"So I assume you need me to risk my career, which I have just built here, and get you into the Arcane Library."
"Please?" says not-Mike. Annis squints at him.
-
Not-Mike grins."No," he says, looking Mike straight in the eye. "Just me."
And as he turns back toward Wyllan, shutting the door behind him:
"Though perhaps a small muffle spell would be wise."
Silence falls almost immediately after that.
Mike lies there for a long time processing what has just happened. Then he gets up, crosses to the pitcher of water left on the corner table, and drinks half of it in one go.
-
"Wyllan, stay up front in case anyone would actually want to talk about your studies," Annis says. “Dusteen, Lucan, you come after.” She casts a critical look over the rest of them, stopping at not-Mike. "And Michael, for the love of Deneir, do not open your mouth."
-
Then both suits begin to shake. The metal plates bend, inexplicably, inward. What comes next is the all-consuming, unmistakable roar of magic. On the far side of the vault, golden light blazes from Wyllan's eyes. Every muscle in his body seems to have locked, holding him in a taut, unnatural pose, blood running from his nose in a crimson line that bends at the curve of his lips. He raises both hands slowly and closes his fists—and the suits of armor, with a horrible shrieking of metal, fold onto themselves like two Coke cans being crushed.
The roar settles.
-
Mike watches a complicated cocktail of emotions move across Jim Hopper's face as he goes through what appears to be all five stages of grief in a few seconds of silence, eyes moving from one of them to the other."Why, by Tyr's mercy, are there two of you," Hopper exhales, like the sight of them physically pains him.
Mike feels a grin splitting his face. He glances sideways at not-Mike, who is wearing an identical one.
"If it helps," Mike says, "I'm dead."
-
"And now I have to go and explain to Wyllan's mother why not only is he a wanted man in Baldur's Gate, but in Waterdeep, too," Hopper says, working through his keys."And Neverwinter," mutters not-Mike under his breath.
"What did you just say?!"
"Nothing."
-
"There's a world," he says, "waiting for you. And the people in it—" his breath hitches. "They love you so much. They have been waiting for you for so long."She listens carefully, tilts her head. Squishes her cheek against Mike's hand, and he laughs.
"You'll see them soon," he continues, "and you'll travel the world together, and you'll have adventures. Grand cities and ancient ruins and vast wilderness."
-
"It's not going to harm me," Wyllan chuckles lightly, then adds with a note of wonder in his voice: "I'm not really here anymore anyway. The gate is already closed.""Then—how?"
"Perhaps this is just in your head now," Wyllan shrugs. "Maybe it all was. But you'll never know for sure."

Summary
Silence. Hungry, carnivorous—or maybe cavernous, vast and lined with teeth, ready to bite. The quiet before the storm, the gasped breath in before the heart stops. Tragedy tastes bitter. Blood tastes like pennies. Both are in the air, promises coating the tongue. Something bad is about to happen.
From beneath the bed, something reaches out—a mass of darkness, a shapeless nothing—and it grabs Mike by the wrist, yanks him forward. Mike chokes on a yelp and flails his arm free, blood dripping from where the shadows grabbed him, like the touch of darkness has split him open. He tries to scramble away, unfolds his legs to kick himself back but only makes himself easier, more vulnerable. The unidentifiable mass encircles Mike's ankle, and he screams something agonized, terrified—and then it pulls Mike, clawing at the carpet with his bloodied fingers, under the bed.
This time, the silence isn't hungry. It's satisfied.
will starts entering the mindscape in his dreams on the same night that mike gets taken by vecna. this is probably the least confusing part of everything that happens after.

When she wakes up it'll be funny to see them all realize that we don't hate each other and haven't for a long time.Happy birthday, Zoomer. Wake up soon, okay?
-
Will knows she's probably going to try to figure it out herself, because she's a Wheeler, and all Wheeler's (except for Ted) seem to have an uncanny ability and desire to solve.
-
"Oh my god," Robin hisses, visibly jumping. "Where the hell did the small child come from?"Nancy frowns. "It's my sister, Robin. You've met her before."
"Right, yes. Sorry. Just…" Robin trails off, then blinks once, twice, a baffled expression following over her features. "Did she just ask about Mike? As in, she knows?"
-
Will realizes that she really must not have realized just how much Mike's been impacted by Ted's behavior, because she sounds thoroughly pissed off when she says, "Maybe you should throw my dad around the room to convince them. That'll do the trick."
-
Maybe if Max hasn't been able to get to it on her own, then they'll have a better chance of getting there if they work together."
-
They don't use a rope this time, not like they did at Eddie's trailer. Instead, they use a ladder stored in the Wheeler's garage, which is about the only useful contribution that Ted is able to make.
-
"Okay, Mad Max," he says to himself, hands trembling at his sides. "Where are you hiding?"
-
Instead, Mike just leans into the embrace and murmurs, "I missed you, Mayfield."She laughs, and it's just as choked off as his first one had been. "Don't let it go to your head," she tells him, "but I've missed your stupid ass, too. It's been… really lonely in here."
-
The portal forms, off to the left, not far from Max's but not right beside hers, either. Asleep by The Smith doesn't mix well with Running Up That Hill, but Will's voice cuts in with, "I kept my promise, so now you have to keep yours and come back to me."
-
With a final scream, he pulls his hand inward, towards himself, and feels the warm splatter of blood on his face as Vecna's chest is torn open.At the same time, El's hands curl into fists and rip apart. Vecna's neck twists, cracks—breaks and tears. He collapses, a burning heap on the floor, weeping bullet holes and his heart laying two feet away from his burst open chest, head rolling from his body. Decapitated, eviscerated.
Dead.

Will took a sip, his eyes drifting closed for a second in involuntary pleasure. When he opened them, Mike was watching him over the top of his own cup, a faint, unreadable flicker in his gaze before it shuttered.“New place,” Mike said casually, as if commenting on the weather. “Closer to my apartment. They don’t burn the beans into charcoal. Figured it was worth a try. It’s nice trying new things.” He didn’t ask if Will liked it. He’d seen it on his face.
-
“And then he chased me down, saw me crying, and his big insight was to tell me I was ‘really pretty when I cry.’”From the other end, Will heard a long, slow exhale, followed by the unmistakable sound of Dustin putting his forehead on his desk. “Oh, Mike,” Dustin groaned, his voice muffled. “You beautiful, hopeless, emotionally constipated disaster of a man.”
-
“If anyone asks,” Dustin said, his tone shifting back to dry, “this conversation never happened. My official stance is ‘communication and honesty are key.’ My unofficial stance is that you’ve been the hero long enough. Try being the guy who gets what he wants for a change. See how it feels.”
-
“I don’t have the map, Mike. You have to draw it. And you have to do it while I’m still… there. With him. Because I’m not leaving a good man for a question mark. You have to become the answer.”
-
Mike’s gaze was distant. “The Cleric doesn’t try to convert him. He just… heals his wounds. Speaks a language the Paladin refuses to understand. The story is about the Paladin’s faith shattering. About learning to see the enemy as human. And the Cleric… starting to see something worth saving in the wreckage.”He stopped, a faint flush creeping up his neck. “It’s about the lies you tell yourself to make the killing bearable. And what happens when you run out of lies.”
-
“It has the same deeply felt, melancholic core that made The Echo Realm so successful. Different setting, of course, but the same emotional truth. That’s his brand, really.”The words did not land immediately. Rather, they floated in the air, harmless, for a single, suspended second. Then they clicked.
The Echo Realm.
-
“Oh. Monumentally bad time. Apocalypse-level bad timing. I can… I can find another bush. I’m a renowned bush-finder. 1985, your mom’s hydrangeas, never forget.”
-
Mike spun around, panic flashing in his eyes. “Leaving? Will, no, he can just—go use the bathroom and wait on the roof, or something, we can finish—”
-
"No, the—you know. The thing. At the bar." Mike's voice was strained. "Maybe you should go check it out."Dustin stared at him for a long moment. Then his eyes narrowed with dawning comprehension. "Oh. Oh. You're trying to get rid of me."
"I'm not—"
"You absolutely are." Dustin crossed his arms, looking deeply offended and deeply amused at the same time.
-
"I think," Mike said, turning to look at him with those dark, endless eyes, "the universe has a really twisted sense of humor. Like whoever is writing our story thinks it's hilarious to keep interrupting us. To make me suffer as much as humanly possible before I finally get to say—"
-
They found Lucas next. He'd gone as Han Solo and looked devastatingly attractive—white shirt open at the collar, black vest fitted perfectly, blaster on his hip. He struck a pose when he saw them, that classic smirk in place."Looking good, Lucas," Will called.
Lucas sauntered over. "Hey, kid. You looking for a pilot?"
-
Dustin appeared, flushed and triumphant, his goggles hanging askew. “Guys, they’re forming a dance circle! And some asshole stole my costume idea, I’m going in!”Before anyone could stop him, Dustin launched himself into the center of a growing ring of bodies. The other Doc Brown—clearly a rival—met him there and suddenly they were battling.
Dustin was moving.
-
Mike was watching him with his own soft expression. The kind of look that made Will feel all gooey on the inside.Erica followed his gaze, then looked back at Will with new understanding. "Oh," she said, deadpan. "I get it now."
Will’s cheeks began to feel warm, and it wasn’t from the stuffy banquet hall. "Get what?"
"Nothing." But she was smirking, as though she'd figured something out and was choosing, for now, to keep it to herself. "You're just as bad as he is."
-
Lucas shrugged, utterly unrepentant. “Obviously. After the first time he met Evan. He was a mess and definitely drunk. Kept asking if I thought he still had a chance, if he'd screwed up too badly, if there was any point in trying." He patted Mike's shoulder condescendingly. "It was pathetic. I loved every minute."" -

Hearing his name, Jonathan appeared to slip away from his dissociative state, blinking several times before tearing his eyes away from the system.
‘So you got to let me know
Should I stay or should I go?’

“So there was this kid,” Blue began slowly, as though he was figuring his words out as he went. “We’ll… we’ll call him Mark.[Very subtle Mark...very subtle...]
-
Tears, like they had been in position for centuries, immediately pooled against his eyes and dripped down his cheeks, and he hadn’t realized he’d broken into a run until he was rushing past the headlights of the car that had been illuminating the deck, toppling into his mother’s arms like a landslide.[Ngl,,,this whole scene with Will and Joyce had me tearing up 💔💔]

“Uh—depends who’s asking?”
Will pauses. Is there a safe answer to that question?
“A friend from school.” He hopes one lie is enough. He prays it is. “So—he does live there?”
The stranger lets out a small, whistling laugh.
“My brother has friends?” she asks,
-
“Don’t grab things, you germ—” the girl hisses.A familiar voice suddenly echoes in the background. “Give—stop—give me the fuckin’ phone, dummy.” With a few more scrapes, the commotion settles and a sharp exhale announces a new speaker on the other end, and Mike sounds so sweet when he chirps: “Mike Wheeler. Who’s calling, please?”
-
He looks towards Jonathan out of habit, not thinking, but regretting. He freezes when he sees. His brother, for some startling reason, is crying too.
-
Will is about to try and feign a response when, of all the people, Dustin pipes in after Lucas. His voice is distant, unfamiliar— Will will understand much later on that this is because he has never heard Dustin sound so angry in all the time they’ve known each other.“Back off, Langford,” he cuts in, his voice thin and sharp like the edge of a steak knife.
-
— “keep his fucking name out of your mouth.”
-
“Yeah, look, I had—“ Will steadies himself, grabbing onto the IV stand again. “I had a little something come up. It’s no biggie, right?”
-
And it would be so easy to explain. To say listen— I got into an accident, I’m at the hospital, they’ve got me on regulated painkillers. It would be so easy to explain in the simplest terms what is going on— Will knows that. So why doesn’t he just do that? Explain it? He thinks, maybe, maybe he’s just exhausted of it. Exhausted in general. Maybe he can let things go terribly for once, because he’s grown weary of trying to hold them together.
-
God, please don’t make him leave. Why can’t you just let him stay?Just let him stay.
That presence, that black glow from indoors persists, and with every passing second, Will feels a bit sicker to his stomach. He drops one foot down to a lower stoop, tapping the heel of his red shoe against the wood beneath him. Don’t lie. You don’t need to lie. Then, simply—
You don’t need to lie to Mike.
-
“Thought so,” he murmurs under his breath.Quickly— quicker than Will has ever seen him react— Lucas’ head whips upwards and he lays a another sharp jab into Dustin’s arm, receiving a hiss of pain in response. That one did hurt.
“Dustin!”
-
Dustin bolts up out of his position on the floor, twisting around to look at Will as though he’s grown another head. “ Wait, huh?” he attempts to cut in, but Will has already turned away and driven his face into the back of the couch, his cheeks darkening by the second.“ He’s going with Mike,” Lucas repeats a little louder, his voice a dull roar over De Niro as Dustin rolls onto his knees, leaning into the couch now.
“No fuckin’ way,” Dustin cuts in, but Will can hear the smile on his face loud and clear. “You’re running away with a boy. Will Byers, running away with a boy.”
-
His brain is one-track, and it meets his mark when Will makes it to his dresser and peers over the back of it. He almost wails.Crouching down at an awkward angle, Will clumsily grabs at the shadowed tin container that had fallen behind his dresser. Tearing off the top, he shudders. Every ounce of his money is in there. Untouched. His fingers grip the dresser edge hard so that he doesn’t fall to his knees when a sob breaks through him.
-
“They ask all the time,” she shot back. “Just because you got kicked out doesn’t mean they don’t still worry about you.”He snorts.

Summary
It’s at that very moment that, for reasons completely and utterly unknown to anyone at all, every single possible word he has ever learned from any language ever has suddenly disappeared from his brain, and his throat feels relevant to the Sahara Desert.
None of this, of course, has to do with the fact that Will is very, very, very – shirtless.
Will blinks at him. “Are you okay?”
“Shoulders,” Mike says, sounding vaguely chipmunk-like, and he hears Max barely choke down a snicker.
Will comes back for the summer, and Mike deals with it.

Summary
Maybe he deserves this. Penance for years of locking lips to prove how totally straight he was instead of asking her if she had any, like, hobbies or whatever… It can’t be as bad as the time he joined her and Hopper on a hike and nearly died of dehydration (true story), so Mike reluctantly agreed. Even if the idea of it made his heart race, just a bit.
“It will be fun, I promise,” El had said as she dragged him over to the window for better lighting, pushing Mike into her desk chair. She started arming herself with pencils and compacts and brushes while Mike fidgeted in his seat.
“Fun, yeah,” he had croaked as she pinned his bangs out of the way. Maybe this won’t be so bad - it’s only blush and lip gloss, right?

it feels it makes him want to try other things – long black skirts and piercings and nail polish. A Pandora’s box of forbidden things that Mike is not allowed to have because that’s as good as social suicide in Hawkins and if anyone finds out, if his dad finds out–
-
Hands cup his face, tilting it up. Cradling him. El is blurry, but he can still make out tears sliding down her own face as she holds him together in the palms that have destroyed worlds.
-
“Maybe at some point…” Mike says hesitantly, “We could give you a makeover. Borrow some of Robin’s clothes, drive out to Indie where no one knows us and we can just…be us. We can take the whole Party.” Or at least Will. He knows Will would get it.[Fu c k,,,, this sounds like an absolute dream ;;;;;]
-
Then he realizes that El, his platonic soulmate and also the devil incarnate, just witnessed the whole thing and his mood does a complete 180.The silence is charged. In his periphery, he sees her open her mouth to tease him no doubt.
“Don’t,” Mike says gruffly.
“You don’t even know what I was going to say,” she laughs and Mike finally looks up. Her eyes dance with mirth. At Mike’s expense, naturally.

“I feel like you used to tell me things,” Mike says.
Will looks away from his Walkman, back to Mike. It’s almost startling, finding him already looking back. “I – tell you things,” he replies, a little awkwardly. He barely gets through the sentence before Mike is already shaking his head.
"No,” he frowns, “you – you used to tell me things. Like, stuff you wouldn’t tell everyone else.” He seems conflicted, and he looks away. “Stuff just between us.”
Will doesn’t know where to begin.
Will tries to navigate a conversation with a freshly-broken-up-with Mike.

Summary
“I’m glad they moved me closer to the art block,” Mike mentions after a second, and Will blinks at him. “It’ll be easier to bother you, now.”
Will clicks his teeth. “Incredibly professional,” he notes, and Mike’s smile widens. Sometimes, Will’s heart feels moments from exploding, like a firework someone had poured gasoline onto and threw in a fire.
“I’m the pinnacle of professional,” Mike decides, oblivious to Will’s cardiovascular issues.
Between being a teacher in a school full of chaos, being in love with his best friend and coworker of several years, and Lucas' worst idea yet, Will tries his best to make it through another school year.

“Have you considered eating a lot of carrots?”
Will gives El a look. “What for?”
“You would turn orange,” El says sagely.
That has Will pause in the middle of the hallway, only a few steps away from Dustin’s classroom. He asks, very slowly and a little reluctantly, “How do you know that?”
El gives him a wide-eyed look, and does not respond to that. “Mike likes oranges. I think.”
-
El furrows her eyebrows. “How long have you had him in the school?”Dustin stares at them. “Um.”
“Since homecoming,” Lucas replies, and Will facepalms.
“Lucas,” Dustin complains, “we talked about this – loyalty, man. You’ve got none.”
“And you’ve got a chicken on your desk!” He says, and there’s very little to defend that with, really, and Dustin visibly deflates. “Come on, man, the jig is up. They know!”
-
Mike presses his lips together. “Holy shit.”“What,” Max stares, “the hell is that?”
[He said the thing !!!]
-
Lucas looks back to Will and presses a finger against Will’s chest – just where his heart is, and he leans in oddly close to peer into Will’s eyes. “Mark my word, Byers,” he says, “I’m not listening to another year of yearning.”
-
Will doesn’t reply, feeling far too lovesick and similar to a peeled orange,[I have it on good authority that Mike likes oranges-- ☝️]
-
but Lucas said it wouldn’t hurt to try, and I might murder him after this because it’s kind of hurting right now, or I might set his baseball cards on fire, I don’t know, I haven’t really decided yet,
-
“You gave me some leeway, right?” He asks, just to be sure, and Lucas furrows his eyebrows.“I mean, I guess so, yeah.”
Will presses a twenty-dollar bill into Lucas’ hand. “Here,” he says, before turning on his heel and promptly making a run for it.
...
and maybe it’s ridiculous of him to be running away from his friends of all things, he’ll admit that, and that any relatively normal person would face the repercussions of his actions – but he’s never claimed to be sensible.[Ends how it starts 😌💖]
