    Over the bridge, a golden figure strode up to meet them. Maeglin could only assume it was Finrod, given the shining hair and luxurious clothing. No one but the King of a realm would wear a robe quite so dazzling, the edges of its wide sleeves studded with tiny fragments of diamond and crystal, and its hem trailing a few steps after him. A golden diadem rested on his brow.

    They met within view of the palace’s main doors, which lay just across the bridge, and Finrod extended his arms in jubilant welcome.

    “Dearest cousins, I am glad you have reached Nargothrond safely!” he said, smiling at each of them in turn. His bright blue eyes widened in curiosity when they met Maeglin’s.

    “Ah, you must be Irissë’s son, Maeglin Lómion!” he said. “It is a pleasure to meet you.”
