“Okay, before we go inside, I need you to promise me you’ll keep an open mind because it’s—uh. A lot.”
“What, is it super messy in there or something? Are there dead bodies under the floorboards? Wait, oh my God, are you a hoarder?”
“No, Ned, just,” MJ rolls her eyes, turns the knob, and swings the door open.
Inside, her room only displays slight disorder—the bed unmade, her desk covered in charcoals and pastels, some clothes on the floor—but the thing that immediately catches Ned's eye is the gigantic rolling cork board by the window, which is covered in photos and notecards and red yarn.
At the center of it all, as the focal point where everything connects, is a picture of Spider-Man.
“Oh, good,” Ned doubles over with relief. “I thought I was gonna have to convince you.”
or: MJ did warn Peter that she'd figure it out again. It's not her fault he didn't believe her.

“I’m telling you,” Ned insisted, hopping every few steps as he tried to wiggle his left foot and adjust the sock wrinkle bunched between his heel and the padded insert. “I’m telling you, something capital-W-Weird is up!”
“No shit,” MJ drawled back, singularly unhelpful. But for all her usual unflappable demeanor, Ned knew good and well his best friend was also feeling antsy about this, this thing. This ‘invitation’ they’d both gotten, with a promise of reimbursement for their time provided they agreed to potentially sign an NDA afterward. Which, GEEZ. Some graduate students or younger professors would brag about being headhunted by different research and development companies and how high the associated dollar signs could get, but Ned and MJ haven’t even gotten through their first year at MIT, for them to have already been noticed somehow is- it’s just- it’s hinky.
But when the one and only CEO of Stark Industries sent out an invitation, like hell would Ned turn it down.

“Oh,” Ned snorts as he lugs the window open, then perches himself on his own desk and sets his drink to the side. “Yeah. MJ calls that our post-bacc. I guess it’s a…little serial-killer-esque, now that I’m really looking at it. Don’t worry, we’re normal.”
Transfixed, dreamlike, Peter takes an unsteady step closer to the Spider-Man board. “What are you guys looking for?” he thinks he asks.
For the first time all night, Ned doesn’t answer right away. Instead, he picks his drink back up and takes a long sip. “Why?” He looks at Peter curiously, voice even. “You know him?”
