    Summary

Bertie just wanted the reassurance that Jeeves wasn’t going to leave. After all, his grand plans of being a bachelor forever would be quite ruined if he didn’t have his valet by his side. So why does it feel like Jeeves is hearing a rather different question to the one the young master is asking?

Or: The one time that Jeeves didn’t want to scheme Wooster out of an unintentional engagement.

If you were playing one of those word-association games that those psychiatrist Johnnies use to tell you that you have odd beliefs about cigars, I bet it would take a good long while before you got from ‘honeymoon’ to ‘aunt’. If there’s one thing that you’re not supposed to have on a honeymoon, it’s an aunt. In fact, as we approached Venice, as far as I knew all my troublesome relatives were five hundred or more miles of clear blue sea away from me, and I gave them not a thought.

In which Jeeves and Wooster are enjoying a relaxing and romantic honeymoon - until Aunt Agatha appears.

But here, now, was my chance. I was not the young master to Jeeves now - in fact, Jeeves, in his current role, had no y. m. at all. He was a gentleman of means and breeding, and I a rather fantastically attired birdcatcher of presumably Viennese extraction; and two such fellows could hold a conversation without any wayward “sirs” inserting themselves where they were not wanted.

I awoke at five, as is my usual time, but I found myself unable to stand and dress myself. I wanted to do little but stay in my bed and read a book all day, but again I found no energy to go stand and grab the book of Spinoza in my valise. So instead I stared at the door of my room, watching as shadows of movement danced behind my door. The house was waking, and I should have too.

Jeeves has an awful, horrid, no good day.

It has been brought to my attention, by certain interested parties, that I have yet to relate in my memoirs the story of how my inimitable manservant Jeeves came to be in my employ. “Surely not,” thought I, rifling through the archives, but alas, it appears as though I have indeed made something of a blunder in this regard. Henceforth, I shall endeavour to correct this glaring omission within this very volume that you are currently holding.

It all began on one chilly September evening.

    Summary

"Now, Wooster, you might be thinking, it’s rather brazen to approach a fellow and suggest the sort of thing you’re about to suggest, it being the sort of thing that can land you two years of hard labor. Not to fear, dear reader. I’ve attempted this maneuver many times and I’ve polished it down to a science. It requires a certain amount of subtly, and that’s something this Wooster has in spades.

First, you start with something rather innocuous, a bit of the old ‘what ho, how are ye’ sort of babble, and from there you try to get a read on the fellow before jumping into the fruiter sorts of questions. It can be dashed difficult to tell if a chap might be one to enjoy a bit of Grecian wrestling, if you catch my meaning, and unless he’s carrying round a copy of Plato’s Symposium, I’ve found it best to start off easy and breezy."

“It’s Jeeves, you see. The fellow’s been disappearing on me like a rabbit out of a magician’s hat. And when I asked him about it last night, the chap said he’d been in the kitchen. He can’t be in the kitchen all the time, can he? I mean to say, why would anyone spend so long in the kitchen? What, I say, what, could keep a fellow there for hours and hours?”

Angela contemplated this for a moment, and what she came up with hit me upside the head with the force of a cricket bat at full swing. “Love?”

“Well this is to say, I believe that one could avoid a goodish amount of trouble if one didn’t have to go and get married to some blithering filly and whatnot just to have a child, or such. I mean, imagine it, Jeeves!” I blundered cheerfully on. “You and I, producing a little battalion of braniacs—junior Jeeveses with massive craniums and an innate taste for fish. No need for a Mrs. Jeeves. No interruption of your duties. Just the best bits of both of us passed down to a new generation.”

    The year is 1921.

Aziraphale is enjoying a quiet and happy summer in Eastgate Abbey, barely troubled by the ramblings of his brother Lord Havensworth about exercise and healthy diets. Bertie Wooster is also enjoying a quiet and happy holiday in Eastgate Abbey with his dear friend Pepper.

This is about to change, because there is no stopping progress, and there is certainly no stopping Mr. Anthony J. Crowley.

"And so we rewrote the tradition a bit into something that would suit both of us much better. Jeeves tells his public he’s going one place, I tell my people I’m going another, and then we meet up at a third location known only to ourselves. Usually someplace nice and quiet, rather isolated from the rest of society, and with dashed good fishing."

“Good Lord, Jeeves, please tell me my eyes are deceiving me!”

“I fear that your visual perception in this instance is correct, sir. It would appear that your friend is just about to ask for her hand in marriage.”

When Bertie bumps into an old friend from Oxford while on holiday, he and Jeeves are quickly thrown into an intrigue of ill-advised courting attempts and a questionable use of braincells that rival even Bertie’s most notorious track records. Whilst trying their best to rein in the hopeless romantic they end up making an unexpected discovery, which leads to a whole soup of its own.
