Summary
“He's the king!” she ran a hand along her hair and dug her fingers into stone. “I’m his guard! We're supposed to protect him!”
Noctule sighed bitterly. “You are,” they corrected, “and he's perfectly capable by his lonesome. He's always hated needing soldiers to begin with.”
The look she gave them was devastating enough to make their eyes go wide and their hands wave desperately in the air. “N- not that I'm saying he hates you! He- he likes you. He likes your company. This is how he… shows? Affection?”
“Affection,” she echoed, “by ordering me to fight him.”

"How long do we have?" a hum. A shuffling of papers.
"I'm handling it, Honored Speaker." your voice is cold and listless. "That is all you need to know."
They whine into the receiver- a soft, vaguely caring sound that makes your feathers fluff up against your back. "It is your turn this week. What's our record now..?"
"I was not aware we had," you search for a suitable word, "a record. Must we describe it as taking turns?"

Summary
Once upon a time, there was a fox in the garden.
Its fur was smooth and soft as silk, and its fangs were sharp and harsh as steel. It sunk its teeth into its fellows, and laughed as scarlet stained its fur.
But one day, the fox came upon a cat. A starving, mewling thing, wretched and small, trembling under its paws.
The cat looked up with wide eyes, and asked if it was about to die.

Summary
Every year the feast kicks off with a sparring match between the monarchs of Arboret- a brilliant show of their magic and potential. Smaller matches occur between civilians, of course, but all eyes are on the opening event.
Mutants, of course, aren't expected to contribute to the festivities. It's a show of magic and potential. What are they supposed to do? Sit and look pretty in the window?
That's how Fomal spent most feasts. Sitting at home waiting for his brother to come back with the spoils. Sometimes he'd roam the woods and listen to the cheers from the treetops.
Sometimes he'd sit against a tree and try not to cry.

Summary
All of my stories set in "Acts, Promises, and Faith", aka APF, now in one big recommended reading order series!
NOTE: If you wish to have an alternative opening, you may instead use "Ornithology" (Part 13) as your first entry, and follow the reading order as normal afterwards. Either it or "To listen, to suffer, to entrust unto tomorrow" serve as suitable introductions to the world.

Summary
"She was a metahuman in my city," said Batman, like this was something that made sense and not a completely deranged mindset for someone to have. "There are no metahumans allowed in Gotham."
"What are you talking about?" cried Superman. "Gotham is an American city and you have no right to say someone isn't allowed to live here. Besides, it has a long history of metahuman protectors. Alan Scott has been here before you were even born, and Dinah used to live here too, and there's also--"
Batman was annoyed. He was pretty sure No Metahumans In Gotham was canon, but he'd never actually read a comic book so he couldn't prove it. All his information came from TikToks and tumblr posts. Was it possible he'd beaten a woman to a pulp based on poorly thought-out headcanons? Luckily, he had a fallback. "I'm the richest man in Gotham and that means it's my city and I decide how it operates."
