Summary
Lord Ormund Hightower possessed the particular arrogance of men who believed righteousness an inheritance. Men who fancied themselves shepherds appointed by the gods, entrusted with gathering stray lambs and purging the wickedness from them. And what lamb had wandered farther than Victoire Staedmon, his poor, sweet Vic, misguided creature, fallen woman.
What did it matter that six husbands had preceded him? The shepherd simply arrived late to reclaim the lost ewe from wolves.
The Seven had placed her in his path as a trial of his virtue, a Jezebel to be washed clean until she resembled the Maiden herself, worthy of his house and name. Holiness was, after all, something a husband could carve into his wife with sufficient patience, and virtue could be beaten into flesh the way a smith could beat iron into shape.
Punishment and mercy were merely two halves of the same divine hand, the hand that was both scourge and benediction. The palm that bruised was the palm that blessed. The gods chastised the ones they loved, didn't they, and there was no cruelty as meticulous as that performed in their name.
A shepherd and his slaughter.
A shepherd and his lamb.
A shepherd and his wolf. -

Summary
The boy is all dark hair and more bone and skin than anything else. His shirt is full of holes and old stains, and he wears a men's black hoodie with patches on the elbows. The only standout thing to Leora is his eyes, which are a deep, dark blue.
“Class, this is Jason Todd. He's a new transfer.”

Summary
None who witnessed the match between Prince Maekar Targaryen and Princess Lihua of Leng could call it a happy one, but few royal marriages were fashioned for happiness.
There had scarcely been time enough to comprehend Dyanna's loss before the king began speaking of remarriage, insisting that Summerhall required stability, that Maekar's household had fallen into disorder without a lady to govern it, and that six motherless children could not be left to nurse their sorrow alone. But all Maekar could think, each time the subject arose, was that Summerhall already belonged to Dyanna.
To bring another woman into her keep was sacrilege, and thus, their marriage became known as a union of absence, between them stretching a gulf neither seemed willing to cross.
