Phil waits for Dan to laugh in surprise, or gasp, or make a stupid joke. Dan says nothing. The baffled smile falls from Phil’s face. Dan’s expression is doing something slow and foreign and complicated, like he’s trying to solve an impossible math problem, or else falling from a very high height.
