Summary
[NON-FICTION FANWORK] Dungeon Meshi is full of vivid and complex world-building. When you take all the information in the manga as a whole, there are clear and consistent patterns in what real world cultures the author was inspired by, and how she arranges them on the Dungeon Meshi world map.
In this essay, I will catalog and explain every real world cultural reference I was able to identify in the manga, including character and location names, historical and mythological references, clothing, and of course food!
WARNING: This essay is full of spoilers for the entire Dungeon Meshi manga, all the extra materials, and the anime. Disturbing and violent moments that happen in the series are described, discussed and analyzed. The essay also discusses real-life world history and mythology, which contains sensitive subjects like war, death, slavery, abortion, child killing, sexual assault, incest, and bestiality. These topics are mentioned in an academic context, and not described. Please proceed with caution if this concerns you.

Summary
With what feels like dread at the back of his throat, Scar watches the rope around them disappear, right as the feeling of an unknown power crawls under his skin. The vigilante snarls. "What did you do?"
It's exactly when Cuteguy untangles himself from Scar that the problem arises. It starts off as a dizziness, so powerful his head swims. But then, the feeling of being seasick transforms into something sharp, a pure blade of pain sliding under his ribcage. Whatever it is that's been done to them, it hurts, and a blurry look at Cuteguy hissing at his side tells him he's not the only one suffering this fate.
As if set off by a forgotten instinct, his hand shoots out to grab the vigilante's, and the throbbing pain against his ribs eases off. Sharing a horrified look, they turn in unison to the villain, who's been laughing at them the whole time. Scar's not the type to swear excessively, but the situation might deserve a resounding Fuck.
They're stuck.
Being hit by a power forcing them to share skin contact for 12 hours should be the ideal situation to help Hotguy's crush on the pink vigilante, right? Such a shame Cuteguy's in love with someone else.

She slowly began her approach to Avid's grave, a flower in hand. At least he was here to experience all the seasons for her.
Drift’s thoughts were interrupted by a loud yelp from Scott. She and Shelby immediately rushed to catch up, staring at the sight he was witnessing. Her eyes led her to see what the elder vampire was looming over—a grave.
An empty grave.
It's been 200 years since the events of Vampires SMP.
…and Oakhurst is due for another massacre.
Or,
Scott, Drift and Shelby return to Oakhurst for their yearly visit to Avid's grave... but he's not there.

It seems like they're disoriented.
A faint melody on piano plays in the distance.
It's slow. Big pauses as if someone forgot what should go next.* Or: crack mixed into serious narrative where Player is a menace, Kris is a dumbass who has no idea how to live with their own autonomy and canonical angst is forgotten in favour of fanfictional angst
* Or: Kris gets to start a New Game for themselves and Player loses most of the control over them. Unfortunately, they have not a single idea what to do about it. They'll try to do something anyway.
