Toby's got enough on his plate, repeating the eleventh grade while also trying to finish twelfth and graduate on time. Now to add stress on top of stress, his sister's started bringing some hot older douchebag home to "study" with her.
Not on Toby's watch.
No way is his smart, beautiful, probably gonna be a multi-millionaire super-surgeon sister gonna settle for a loser with an annoyingly pretty face and too many abs. And if the only solution is to butt into every second they get alone, so be it. Toby's protected his mother and sister from a lot in the past, and he'll protect Lyra from this too. Even if it means adding stress on top of stress on top of stress.
Toby's got a lot of experience in not breaking. He can handle this. Whoever this Jack guy thinks he is, he won't be around for long. Not if Toby has anything to say about it.

It's wintertime, which means that the cabin the Proxies are staying in is hardly cozy. As awkward as it may be, they have to sleep in the same bed for warmth. This leads to late-night conversations that stem from Toby's ADHD brain and his inability to sleep. Lucky for him, Brian and Tim care about him too much to kick him out.
