“We’re roommates,” Ivan answers immediately, no hesitation whatsoever in his reply. Till wonders if he anticipated the question and had an answer ready in case it was asked, which probably makes the response even worse, because respectfully, what the fuck.
The answer catches Till off guard, his mouth hanging slightly open as he turns to Ivan.
Till blinks, then echoes, “Roommates.”
“But we’re not dating… or anything,” he adds, a nervous glance sent Till’s way as he avoids direct eye contact. A first for the other boy, given how intensely he looks at Till literally every other second.
Roommates but not dating anything, my ass. What did they think they were?
Or, Till reminds Ivan that they do a lot of things that roommates don’t usually do.

This always happens to Ivan. He felt suffocated around Till because of love and jealousy. He felt love towards Till; that was obvious enough. But, jealousy, even if Mizi wasn't here, always made the black-haired man feel as if Till's thoughts constantly wandered off to think about her.
"If you're going to choke yourself, don't do it in front of me," Till's voice cut through the silence, his sharp eyes tracking the movement of Ivan's fingers against the black fabric of the taller man's sweater.
Ivan snapped out of his thoughts, delayed on responding to Till for a few seconds before his expression softened, and then he replied to the shorter man's words in a teasing tone as always, "Always so concerned about me, Till. I'm quite flattered."

"Do you believe in heaven, Agent Red Star?" Mizi wonders, peering up at Ivan. Her neck hurts. Everything hurts, really. It feels stupid. Her mother has already told her that she's going to the store today to get a new fish, so the other one in the pair doesn't notice and tragically give in to loneliness. Mizi wishes her pain were so replaceable, too.
"Would you like me to believe in it, Agent Pink Jellyfish?" he asks, leaning down so they are at eye level. When the adults do it, Mizi tends to feel even smaller. But when Ivan does it, she feels just right-sized. "I mean, I do believe they have to go somewhere. The law of conservation of energy demands it."
Mizi sighs, shoulders sagging. "I think I slept through that lesson. Do you think Till's mother went to the same place, too?"
(Or: Mizi's goldfish dies, leaving her pondering over its fate. Ivan suggests a more practical method of mourning. Spoiler Alert: They decide to eat it.)

In this world, as in the other, it was love at first sight. Till looked at Mizi and blushed so deeply that Ivan thought he might catch fire, and Sua and Mizi looked at each other like they finally knew the meaning of the universe at eleven.
And Ivan, well, he was unlucky in this one too, because at least for now, his love would remain only his to bear. He would carry it for two, for years to come, and it would bring pain as much as it brought happiness. But later, he will find himself looking back and realize that he didn’t mind one bit, because the choice to love was never a waste, no matter the outcome.
Or, if they had more time and lived in a far gentler world.
