I thought you were supposed to be polite Canadian boy.” A breath of laughter sounded in his ear and Ilya perked up despite himself even if he did beat down his grin with sheer force of will. “Are you drunk? You drank without me and now you miss me. Very sad for you.”
    “I—"
    Ilya’s smile dropped in an instant and his feet hit the carpet as he vaulted off the bed. Something was wrong. Hollander sounded wrong.
    “Hollander, what is wrong?” Ilya demanded and listened hard.
    Then he heard it. Shaky inhales and even shakier exhales that made his stomach drop to the floor.
    “I need—" Hollander’s voice broke as he took in a pained breath. He was in pain.
    Ilya started scrambling for his shoes. “Talk to me, Hollander.”
