    Summary

He turns. Komaeda is leaning against a table with his legs crossed, tilting dangerously on the back legs of the wooden chair. His eyes gleam like a lion, mouth not betraying his excitement. “Do you ever, Hinata-kun?” A few beats pass. A slow, glittering smile takes over his face. It has the shine a freshly-sharpened knife does when you grind it against marble.

Something like you? his mind can’t help but run. He white-knuckles his styrofoam cup. Never. Not even me. He doesn’t say that. Komaeda hates reminders. “What are you doing here?” He bites back what are you doing up. He knows. He knows as he has ever since Kamukura found that damned file among all the others in the Hope’s Peak archives about their studies, the only one titled with Komaeda’s name. The only one without a picture.

    ...

Hinata is the only Remnant who takes insomnia instead of nightmares when it comes to guilt and PTSD. One night, with a full moon over their island paradise, he goes looking for a drink to drown out the flashes of fire in his vision, the smell of gasoline smoke, the drag of decay beneath his feet.

Turns out he wasn't the only one looking for a drink.

    Summary

The sky was bright blue, a strange occurrence for Japan this time of year. Soon the cherry blossom trees would go bare, and the cold would make the pain worse. Winter had already begun, Komaeda falling asleep on his textbooks every night, chronic fatigue forcing him to take breaks he doesn't allot himself.

You'd think he would just give in eventually. He doesn't. He stands from the fountain, vision cascading black static. He pretends he can see, following the tile cracks beneath his shoe. “Don't wait up for me!” Komaeda shouts. He can't read their expressions very easily, especially through the glare of pre-syncope. “You know I'm- ah, not the most athletic.” He chuckles, but its weak.

Across the block, Hinata Hajime feels something shift. Suddenly the chatter is too calm, and suddenly the tall skyscrapers feel too empty. “Guys,” he says, voice pitching into panic. “Guys, where's Komaeda?"

    ...

Kirigiri Jin uses charity services to filter Reserve Course students out for a Project that could change humanity.

Hinata has learned everything about being a caregiver to the sick. He thinks he's just in time.

    Summary

Nagito Komaeda has stage three malignant lymphoma. Hajime Hinata just so happens to be – among too many other things – the Ultimate Oncologist.

(Or, circumstance drags Hinata and Komaeda kicking and screaming into something like trust.)

    Summary

‘As far as I’m aware,’ says Komaeda – tone never once veering into dangerousness, and yet – ‘we’re not required to meet for breakfast anymore, are we? It’s not like we’re expecting anybody to turn up dead.’

He punctuates turn up dead with an affable sweep of his hands, which pushes up the sleeves of his jacket. A wave of the chemical smell rolls towards Hajime, and behind it the unmistakeable smell of rotting flesh.

    Hajime recoils and steps back.

In which Komaeda is perfectly capable of looking after a dead girl's hand, Hinata is perfectly capable of introspection, and there's no possible way that everything could go wrong.
