Summary
While on a mission storming a HYDRA facility, James Buchanan Barnes touches one of the many strange alien devices collected by the Red Skull. He does this, in fact, twice— in the past, and in the future.
Next thing he knows, Bucky Barnes is opening his eyes in the 21st century, which is full of great gadgets and coffee, and at least includes his old pal Steve. (And, inexplicably, a different Stark.) Meanwhile, the Winter Soldier finds himself in the middle of World War Two, helping Captain America hunt down HYDRA (which is at least familiar), pretending to be Bucky Barnes (which is not), and figuring out the very noisy group of soldiers who call themselves the Howling Commandos.

In some ways, Phil had it the worst; he was the ultimate voyeur most of the time as the others engaged the villains. The distance did nothing to lessen the impact; watching a child die at the hands of a criminal or an innocent civilian go down beneath falling concrete was never easy, no matter where he was. Late at night, he’d play it all back in his mind, thinking of what they could have done differently, and, if he was feeling brutally honest, indulge in a sense of frustration over his sideline status; as much as everyone else, Phil wanted to be running into danger, not waiting it out, fingers itching to pull a trigger or curl into a fist. No, Phil spent far too much time mouthing silent promises to whatever deity might be listening, hoping to never hear the call that anyone was hurt or missing or down … especially Clint.

Summary
The thing about Bucky these days is that, while he might be a semi-mythical assassin, he's also vulnerable—the kind of vulnerable that makes total strangers want to drape a blanket over his shoulders and take him to safety. The problem is, of course, that Bucky is already safe.
The first time it happens, Bucky has no idea how to react. He and Steve are walking down the street, when a slight woman takes in Bucky’s terrified eyes, the dark circles so bad they almost look like bruises, and Steve’s protective hand resting on his lower back, guiding him down the busy sidewalk (but it must look possessive, to someone looking for a sign), and comes to the wrong conclusion.

Hands down one of the best series I've ever read. Intimately researched, precisely composed, and full of heart, the story winds itself in and between and back again from each character and I love how well the author clearly knows them. Cannot recommend this enough - a staple o the genre
