Summary
The server returned the way a dying machine coughs back to life. Slow and uneven. Reality loaded in layers. First came the sky: flat and pale, clouds frozen like painted brushstrokes. Then the mountain. Then the ground beneath Tango’s back.
He gasped sharply as gravity remembered him and slammed him onto the dirt. “Damn it!”
The impact knocked the breath from his lungs. Dust puffed around him as he lay there, blinking up at the sky. For several long seconds, the world flickered between frames: trees phasing in and out, shadows sliding across the terrain like they couldn’t decide where they belonged.

"I'm fine," Tango muttered warily. He didn't feel fine, but the man being an arms-length away was already too close to bear. Maybe he was glad he hadn't gone home. "I'll be fine. I'm alive, aren't I?"I hope, at least.
The priest looked taken aback, but adjusted himself to the new distance. "Right, right," he said, clearing his throat. "But - well, there's more to being alright than just being alive." The man's eyes trailed along Tango's form, dirtied, bloodied, and beaten as it was, and Tango's insides squirmed at the attention. Maybe he just shouldn't have come back to town at all.

Jimmy kinda had to admit: he might be in a little over his head. Just a smidgen.
Rock dust showered down over him as another shot hit the rock he was sheltering behind, his hat keeping most of it from his eyes. He clutched his hat as he ducked forward. Raising his revolver, he shakily checked his rounds, finding three bullets still in the chambers. A hand groped around for his ammunition pouch on his belt, drawing a few rounds out and trying to load them with a shaking hand.
He found the right poster and held it up, glancing between the sketched face beneath the ‘Wanted: Dead or Alive’ and the man in front of him.
Yep, that was Tango Tek alright.

And maybe that should make him feel worse, because at the end of the day, it’s pity fueling the kind words and actions given to the Ranchers—but Jimmy looks at Pearl and sees nothing but guilt in her exhausted expression. No matter what Scott might say about her, Pearl is a kind soul that just wants a friend and has received nothing but unfair scrutiny.
Jimmy throws her a bone, gives her a chance to take it all back. Maybe he isn’t as eager to get burned by his foolhardy trust as he thought he was. “Are you sure?”
“Yeah.” Pearl waves a flippant hand—all but throwing the metaphorical bone back in Jimmy’s face. “You have it. I can’t just leave like that, that’s not me.”
