He must have fallen asleep before the meeting and Dimitri must have tried tossing water on his face to wake him up. Dimitri wouldn’t have known that was a sure-fire way to make Ryland have a panic attack.

Not for the first time, Jackson wonders why he agreed to this partnership. But there’s something he can’t quite put his finger on, something about the soft, hapless, helpless way March loves his daughter and knows what a screwup he is, that makes something funny happen inside Jackson’s chest. He hasn’t eaten yet today but it feels almost like his stomach is twisting, like he’s about to do something stupid and completely out of his own control even though Jackson Healy has always prided himself on how well he keeps himself under control.

Healy sighs at the man. “It’s not psychic, I’ve just been around Holly long enough now to get a pretty good read on her. And you, might I add.”
March glares at him, but neither of them bring up the first time they met, and Healy had been able to tell. He knew, and March knew he knew, and for the longest five seconds of Holland’s life he’d been pinned down in his own goddamn kitchen by the first Alpha he’d had physical contact with since his wife died. Healy just breaking his arm had almost been a relief at that point.
Holland March is an Omega, and his business partner that he only has the most professional relationship with is an Alpha. Even though neither of them have mates, that is absolutely not a problem, because, again, Holland March is a consummate professional. And he doesn’t go into heat anymore. March gestured anxiously, waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Healy paused. “Ohhhhh. The nasty stuff. Whips and handcuffs. Girls and animals.”
“Close,” March said, grimacing. He really, really didn’t want to have to explain this. “Think more like…. Disco.”
“Disco?” Healy raised an eyebrow. “What, like the queer music? You think the back room of that store is full of porn for… For disco fans.” He nodded thoughtfully a couple of times. “And you’re an expert about this?”
For a second the whole world went white around the edges and March thought he might pass out. He was too sober for this conversation. What exactly had Healy noticed that morning, how obvious exactly had his full-body reaction to Healy’s hand on his neck been? “I was a happily married man!” March said, and as soon as it came out of his mouth he knew it was wrong. Too fast, too high-pitched, too loud.

It was a stupid fucking idea. That had already been established beyond reasonable doubt. However, Healy was not entirely opposed to stupid ideas, and often encouraged them, even passively, just to see what happened. That's how he ended up here, wasn't it?

“Y'like?” March was leaned up against the orange wood of his bathroom door frame, the pale backlight lighting him up like a star. “Is it convincing, at least?”

Healy didn’t know if March was aware. They had never done anniversaries. But it was something about ten years that just felt so significant. Maybe the fact that he didn’t forget this time, or the fact that Healy felt so lucky that every day for the past decade, March had woken up beside him, a greying, overweight man over ten years his senior, and decided to stay.
So… what do you do for your partner when you want to celebrate but you don’t know how? Healy doesn’t know the answer.
