It flew from her mouth before she could think any better of it, because it was the truth. She did get it. Master Vi’s circling, last-child loneliness, the singleminded attention he dedicated to this pursuit of his. It did not matter in that moment that he wore the Hemlocke ring or that he was a first-year student at the most prominent university in their country; it only mattered that he wanted her help.
Master Vi perked up. “Then you’ll come with me?” he asked, sparkling with eagerness.
“Where are we going?”
“Where else? To the protest this weekend, of course.”
It is the golden peak of summer; the sky is rich with promise. One unremarkable evening, the youngest son of the chaebol Hemlocke family invites his oldest brother's typist to the pro-democracy protest on the weekend.
