Summary
Hermione Granger learned Legilimency to save Harry Potter. She never meant to hear Draco Malfoy at all.
But one morning in the Great Hall she found herself in the mind of the boy who spent five years calling her a slur, not a plot, or a plan, or a Dark Lord's orders but what felt like worship.
It was a boy who had loved her since a train ride at eleven years old, and who was walking, alone, toward something that was going to kill him.
She told herself it was principle. She told herself it was pity. She told herself, for years, that it wasn't anything at all, except that it was.
So she listened. She lied to her best friends. She robbed the minds of Death Eaters in the dark. She built a defense for a boy who did not know he needed one, out of stolen memories and hundreds of years of pureblood law.
And when the war ended she walked into a Ministry holding cell and offered Lucius Malfoy a life debt and let him believe he had outplayed her.
He believed it for nine years.
Now Draco Malfoy is twenty-four and finally, genuinely free. And Hermione Granger is coming to collect.

It wasn't just the rules stopping Hermione from calling out to Harry as he hurried down the hall. The unfamiliar, dark look that had been pooling in his eyes terrified her. The sounds of groaning were still coming from the boy’s bathroom as water began to slowly puddle into the hallway. Hermione swallowed tightly, the optimism in her dying. She'd never known Harry to use a violent spell before, especially on anyone other than a Death Eater.
She moved closer, and after pausing at the water, took a step. It was cold as it flooded over her shoe. As she entered the bathroom, the translucence of the water became tinged with pink, then opaquely flushed with a deep red.
“Oh Merlin,” Hermione gasped.
There, half-submerged in the water, laid Draco Malfoy, shirt thick with blood, face reared in pain. So much blood was flooding from his body into the water—she couldn’t believe how much blood—and it was still leaking from his skin. Despite his pain, his eyes flashed at her with recognition and then hatred.
Hermione discovers Draco Malfoy after being cursed with Sectumsempra. Why would someone save a boy who hates her for her blood and may be becoming a Death Eater?
