Summary
It was time for one of Arlathan’s grand gatherings once again.
The Evanuris and their courts had come together at the heart of the empire to feast, drink, posture, and pretend their endless political games were anything more than vanity dressed in gold.
As Mythal’s right hand, Solas had attended enough of these gatherings to know exactly what awaited him over the coming weeks: bloated speeches, petty power plays, too much wine, and far too much pride.
What he did not expect was the woman standing at Ghilan’nain’s side.
A woman he had never seen before.
A woman who did not seem impressed by him in the slightest.
A woman who would prove to be far more dangerous than Solas first assumed. And Solas, for all his wisdom, had always been far too proud to ignore something that intrigued him.

Summary
The concept of heartmates is more ancient than any story collected in all of Thedas. It supersedes law, custom, blood, and even crowns. Yet of all the things that bring certainty to Solas, this is not one of them. As a former spirit of Wisdom, he understands the concept, the construction, and even the manner of acting.
He does not, however, understand why anyone would want such a dreadful thing.
Or, an alternate universe where Elvhenan survives and fated mates are the cause.

Solas's gaze lingered, softening. “I left because it was not right for me to stay. I wanted you to have the chance at a normal, happy life.”"Happy? Normal?” She laughed, but it quickly turned to something broken. “You never were very good at predicting the consequences of your actions.”
Solas studied her. He stood there with his arms behind his back. He was silent for a moment before replying with a small sigh. “No. I suppose that's true.”
“The last time I was happy was in Crestwood before you decided to no longer distract me from my duties.” She said sadly. “Look at me. All I have is duty. And you, Solas. Have you been happy?”
His mouth quirked sideways as if unprepared for this question. “What I want . . . my desires are of little consequence. I've never expected to be happy.”
“Then why would you expect it of me?”
