Summary
Before everything else – before his brother, before the pain, before strings of tense conversations with his Umavi, before the Tomes and the Bastion and the books and the titles – was the Light, and the magic.
Essek remembers being young, so young. He remembers his Umavi's fingers on his chin, lifting his head up, so he could lay eyes on a Beacon for the first time. He remembers the way the Dunamis in the room tasted on his tongue; the impossibility of looking away; the feeling of strings in his soul, being plucked at their natural frequency for the first time, resonating.
In the quiet hours of the morning, he can admit that it is unsurprising that for years, he called that feeling faith.
or: Essek Thelyss, and his lifelong relationship with magic, dunamancy, and gravity.

Thjazi Fang is dead.
Thjazi is dead, Hal’s home is bustling, and lurking beneath it all, in the glances Azune keeps throwing him and the desperation with which Thaisha is getting drunk, is the utter fucking failure of their combined attempt to write a different ending to the Epic Tale of Thjazi Fang.
or: as guests and strangers make their way into and out of Hal’s home, he reflects.

Summary
FRIDA is never not thinking about Fresh Cut Grass.
It’s like… a half-remembered dream that follows them around all day; like the rousing jig they heard a snippet of in a tavern on their journey to Eiselcross that they haven’t encountered since but can’t forget; like the scent of woodsmoke clinging to the fabric of their coat for days, faint and inescapable.
[or: a conversation between FRIDA and Ashton at the Spire by Fire.]

Summary
Light, but this is embarrassing. He is a heretic, he is a traitor and a Beacon-thief, he was once the fucking Shadowhand of the Bright Queen, and now here he is, in a small House of Guidance in the Light-damned City of Beasts, crying. The closest thing to a show of faith he’s managed in decades. If only his Umavi could see him now.
or: Essek Thelyss takes an ill-advised trip into the Dynasty, and introspects.

Summary
Caleb Widogast is figuring his life out. He has friends now, a job he cares about, and can even – on a good day – have fifteen Bunsen burners turned on in his classroom, and not get pulled into the flames. What he does not have, is any experience training other teachers.
Essek Thelyss is a prodigy, one of the Marble Tomes' foremost researchers, and the son of one of the Dynasty's most influential families—he is certainly not a teacher of children. And yet, somehow, he has ended up at a school on the other side of the border, with a list of publications as tall as he is and no classroom experience.
All he knows when he arrives is information gleaned from the school's website, and the name of the person who will be training him—Caleb Widogast.Or: a Mighty Nein and/or Shadowgast Teaching AU.

Summary
Despite what the Dynasty, the Empire, and his own family might believe, former Shadowhand Essek Thelyss does love. He loves his mother, despite their disagreements, his brother, despite their distance, and he loves the Mighty Nein despite all that has happened between them. Moreover, even if the Nein don’t believe it, Essek has loved them to the point of abandoning his work, his life, and chasing after them in the frozen fields of Eiselcross, into the horrors of the Astral Sea, and wherever else their adventures might take them. And Essek, despite himself, loves Caleb Widogast most of all. However, he would never admit such to the Nein, who he knows still hold him at arm’s length for his crimes. Still, he is determined to earn their trust back, even if he knows they will never love him back. Not the way he wants them (or more specifically, one of them) to.
However, someone else has taken notice of his affection, lurking in the shadows of peace times. Someone whose plans were almost ruined from Essek’s love. Someone who wouldn’t mind enacting a bit of revenge.
Or, what if someone took all the love Essek has for the Nein and redirects it?

Summary
A house of his own.
The thought slams into Caleb with the force of a sledgehammer, the enormity of it nearly knocking the breath out of him. It's over twice as large as the cottage where he'd spent his childhood—a kitchen separate from the dining room and the sitting room! Not one, but two bathrooms! And best of all, three whole bedrooms! Enough space for Caleb, his books, and whichever of his friends would deign to visit him. The height of luxury indeed. Back then, Bren’s parents could only afford one bedroom, and young Bren himself had slept in the loft. Frumpkin would curl up on the foot of Bren’s mattress, and he'd wake to the smell of breakfast, the early morning light in his eyes, the rafters brushing his hair when he got up.
Or so it had been once, an entire lifetime ago.
“Veth,” he says.
She looks up at him. Then she grins. “Isn't this exciting?”
“I think so,” Caleb says, a split second too late.
