It was a stupid thought, really. Haurchefant had this habit (bad habit. Terrible fucking habit.) of putting ideas in his head. He talked about ‘after the war’ like that was a scheduled event rather than a vague idealistic dream, and it made Mhana start to want things.

So he made the stupid ring and stuck it in his pocket to rot, and now here it was, molded in the shape of a silver snake, curled in Haurchefant’s palm, staring back at him with that stupid ruby eye he’d given it to match his own. Stupid.

Throndir didn’t even look over, focusing on balancing the bundle of firewood on his back. “What do you miss, Fero?”
“Carpentry. I used to make stuff! I made all my own furniture, it was awesome.”
“I mean, no one's going to stop you. It’s not like we don’t need the help.”
Fero wrinkled his nose, breath curling in the air in front of him.
“How’s that going to help? We don’t need another guy making cabinets, we need food. I just miss doing it, that’s all.”
“Alright, I’m just saying- No one's going to be mad if you wanted to make a chair or something.”Fero kicked at a snowdrift, sending flakes scattering off into the wind.

Summary
Simon is more convinced that this is hell. He will be forced to relive his last moments alive for eternity, his blood wasted to slick the throat of the eel. He will be chewed, dissolved, discarded, entombed, chewed, dissolved, discarded, entombed for infinity. He tries to exercise some will in this cycle by falling back into unconsciousness. After all, he figures, if this truly is his punishment, some devil will ensure he’s awake to feel his death.
It is not a devil who wakes him. His eyes open to see a light lift him from the blood, pull him from the grasping hands of the damned.
“Angel?”
The angel does not respond.

On their way back to Erid, Rocky and Grace encounter some weird blips. They've been watching Scooby-Doo and are getting a bit bored so might as well do some sleuthing of their own, right? Who knows, could be someone else trying to fix the Astrophage problem. And it's on the way! How convenient! They aren't prepared to find another human, who is living a blood soaked submarine. In space.
