Summary
When Jim Kirk moved back home to Iowa and took the ED nurse job recommended by his friend McCoy, he was expecting it to be a calm change of pace from his old urban hospital. Instead, it's the same shit, just with crappier equipment and a smaller staff. His fellow nurses are great, thankfully, and the lab tech on the other end of the phone has a particularly nice voice.
Spock, former Chemistry technical specialist and perpetual night shift lead, prefers to focus on his work without interruption. Constantly calling critical results to the floor is inconvenient, especially when the new ED charge nurse has such a pleasant laugh.
Hospital AU, featuring flirting over the Vocera, needlessly detailed medical jargon, and a disgusting amount of love paid to the lab staff.

I had an absolute blast reading this fic and I’m both excited and sad to get to the end. I spent the entire weekend picking up my phone in any spare moment just hoping to get a little more in wherever I could. I even accidentally let my shower get cold because I lost myself while waiting for my evil hot water tank to catch up.
I was full of excited anticipation at both the “how” in how they get together and in thw “what” of what’s going to happen next?? I super loved all the cool and interesting processes and things in the medical/lab. Did I understand everything? Probably not, but I think I might have actually learned something! I loved that there were links and sources in the end notes, and I felt like everything was described and explained in such a clear and digestible way.
I also just started watching The Pitt recently and even though finding this fic was a happy accident, I kept thinking how lucky it was that I got something that overlapped my love of Star Trek and the blossoming affection of something new. A happy little venn diagram of my interests.
There were so many things I enjoyed about this fic, the way you reblended the characters to fit the AU and how you chose to portray these versions of them, the very real life aspects woven in to the story that added reality and depth, the flirting and banter, and realistic dialogue and of course all the delightful real world knowledge of their fields.
I think you said something at the beginning about this being a love letter to the lab. This read like that, and so much more. I’m always amazed that fanfiction is free and writers like you pour their heart and time into something that I can just sit here and enjoy, for free.
Thank you for this wonderful ride, I loved it, and I know I’ll be coming back to it in the future.
