"Are you Russian?" Shane turned and said, a little too loud.
Ilya laughed and lowered his head to the bed. That was a very cute laugh. "What gave me away?" He straightened up and looked at Shane.
"The accent. I'm sorry, um... It's hot, actually." Fuck, why would he say that?
"Is okay. Are you gay?" Ilya crossed his arms and looked at Shane with a smirk that went straight to his dick.
"Uh... I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to ask me that." Shane turned red in an instant. "I didn't mean anything when I said it's hot. I'm sorry." He was messing this up so badly he should just pack and go back home.
"Stop apologizing. I know I'm hot, yes." Ilya finished making the bed and got closer to Shane, leaning on his desk. "You are hot too. We can tell each other that, since we are both straight." He lowered his head back and winked. Fucking winked. What an asshole.
"I'm... I'm not—"
"So, gay?"

Freshman year was supposed to be simple: get out of Ottawa, get drunk, get laid. Then Shane met his hot Russian neighbor, who very helpfully announced that he was straight.

Summary
Shane Hollander was supposed to be the next best thing. He was supposed to leave his friends behind for the bright lights of an NHL arena, spending his twenties on the ice. His dream died at 18 when a knee injury destroyed his prospects as a prospect.
Three years of rehab and surgeries later, Shane starts an undergrad degree at the University of Toronto, suddenly behind all of his friends. But he loves them, so his new life revolves around them. That is why he spends time watching their stupid beer league team, the Centaurs. Ilya Rozanov is the Centaurs best and most arrogant player. In Canada to handle his Dad's exporting business, no one knows why someone as good as Rozanov is slumming it in men's league. As in every universe, Shane and Ilya just can't stay away from one another.
This is inspired by one of my all time favourite fics that has sadly been scrubbed from the internet. It's a slow burn AU where Shane and Ilya are 20 somethings in Toronto. It asks: what if Shane and Ilya were not NHL players but still have a secret casual, no feelings sexual relationship that ends with them falling in love. I'm not saying it will be an easy path to the end but it will certainly be interesting.
