Harry haven’t finished packing. It had just seemed too good to be true, when he’d read Dumbledore’s letter, the prospect of leaving Privet Drive again after merely a fortnight!
Of course, he didn’t know what this safe house would be like, and with whom he’d share it, if anyone, maybe it would turn out to be even worse than staying with the Dursleys, although he’d sincerely doubted it. Still, he hadn’t been able to entirely shrug off the feeling that something was going to go wrong – whether it’d be that his reply to Dumbledore’s letter would somehow go astray, or this Professor be held up and unable to come, or worse still: the whole thing might even be a trap.
AU:HBP - Dumbledore does send Harry a letter telling him that he'll be leaving Privet Drive early, however it isn't Dumbledore who will show up and it isn't The Burrow that Harry will spend the remainder of his summer...
And as this fic has really taken me for a ride, this will continue into DH as well (not Epilogue compliant!)

Harrys wondering what hes going to make for dinner that night when the news breaks and murmurs start to rumble up through the store. He doesn't know what it's about until it reaches an old woman shopping with her husband a few steps down the aisle from him.
“Well it's just so unexpected, isn't it?” She says, speaking in a hushed but excited tone, “The Dark Lord has never shown any interest in having a consort, let alone children! And now all of a sudden he's making an announcement like this? I just never would have guessed. I wonder if it has anything to do with-”
Her voice gets softer as Harry walks past her on his way to the cash register. He hates listening to gossip, not when he knows what it feels like to be on the other side of it. His curiosity is peaked despite himself though, and he finds himself glancing at the newspaper while the cashier waves his items into a paper bag.
"Voldemort declares a new era. The search for the mage to carry his heir has begun."

Summary
On January 15th 1986, authorities were called to number 4 Privet drive after a Muggle primary school teacher reported the prolonged absence of their student, Harry James Potter. After the police investigate the Dursley's residence, they find evidence that a body had been removed from the building nearly 2 weeks before. It takes several months for the Ministry for Magic to catch wind that anything has gone wrong.
In 1998, a young boy shows up at the Ministry, hoping to join Minister Gaunt's education program.
