The ribbon wrapped around his throat, pressing a reminder into skin as he swallowed. For a moment, the Pure Vanilla in the mirror distorted, shifted, narrowed gaze staring at the golden bow tied around a blue neck with predatory satisfaction—and a version of Shadow Milk's own self darted wide eyes back up. But the image in the mirror returned to normal with a blink, nothing but the slight increase in Shadow Milk's pulse to tell him he'd seen anything out of place.
His fingers rose to the base of his neck.
Or:
Shadow Milk accepts Pure Vanilla's offer of friendship in the spire, planning to steal the soul jam and get his revenge as soon as an opportunity presents itself. But Pure Vanilla isn't letting Shadow Milk have the chance to do any of that, much less leave. -

Summary
Clotted Cream—renowned superhero agent, polished and impossibly confident—had shown up in Pure Vanilla’s life like a storm wrapped in a tailored suit. When the man first asked him to work for the Silver Tree Super Hero Agency, Pure Vanilla had honestly thought it was a joke. Or a scam. Or some elaborate misunderstanding.
Yes, his healing quirk was strong. Exceptionally so, according to the records. But his vision problems made fieldwork impossible. He couldn’t fight villains, couldn’t patrol cities or leap into danger like the heroes on the news. And he had accepted that long ago.
Against his better judgment, he had said yes.
There were many reasons for that decision, but the most honest one was money.
Between his part-time coffee shop job, White Lily’s reporting work for a fairly large news channel that paid little unless you broke a major story, and Shadow Milk’s teacher salary, they were barely staying afloat. Rent came due faster every month, groceries cost more, and villain attacks were growing more frequent and more destructive. Insurance barely covered anything anymore.

Whatever the ancient did, Shadow Milk refused to give in, refusing to let him see beneath the surface of his intentions. Who would have thought that the impetus to unravel the riddle of the jester's soul would come from the Spire of Deception, almost betraying its master?

Jax had gone to that bridge with the sole intention of jumping. He didn't want to be here, and he didn't want to keep existing. He was done with all of it. So of course he just had to get stopped by someone. Of course he just had to not want her to do exactly what he was doing. Of course she just had to be a dick about it and care. So now he's stuck in a deal. They have one year to live, and he thinks that maybe it would be better to go out with a bang. After all, what's the point in living for a whole year if he's not going to do something fun with it?

Note: This is a story about suicide and suicidal ideation. It will be discussed, and even semi-glorified by some characters. I'm pulling from my own experiences with loss, grief, and depression; as well as the lessons I learned about continuing to breathe. There will be a happy ending though, I promise <3

Pure Vanilla Cookie is in the earthroots of the Silver Tree. And at the bottom of those roots, lies the Soul Jam that calls for him. And that Soul Jam belongs to an imprisoned Fount.
Pure Vanilla Cookie must slay him. If he does not, it will be the end of all things.
Of course, Pure Vanilla Cookie, being Pure Vanilla Cookie, cannot accept such an ending.
And so, he sets forth a chain of events to bring a Virtue home.
