Summary
Ryland Grace and Colton Seavers are happier than they ever have been. Colt has gone back to stuntwork after his accident, and he and Jody are beginning to make plans for the future. Ryland finds fulfillment in teaching his beloved students (and the occasional drink with a friend). The two are as close as a pair can be, despite the tragedy of their upbringing.
But what happens when Ryland suddenly disappears?
Colt must put everything he has on the line to save the only family he has left, and he's quickly running out of time. He's determined to bring his brother back home, even if it might be the end of him.
...And he's not the only one looking.

I can see it: my emaciated body, clinging to the last dredges of life, with barely the strength left to breathe. The bruising peppering my skin. The holes in my mouth where my teeth have come loose. The curve of my softened skull where my hair has fallen away. A form so sunken that it’s nearly indistinguishable from the sheets that envelope it, yet despite this the shaking still comes, futilely fighting off the chill that emanates from deep within its core. Not a person anymore.
How long will that take? I wonder. How long will I be able to claim that I am still alive, still here, still real? How long before I forget the fundamental parts of myself? Will it be quicker, if I’ve already done it before? Can this vision of me still be counted as an iteration of Ryland Grace?

No matter how much she’s grown in the past few years, it always returns to her: a wild dog she’s made the mistake of feeding too many times. She thought she’d been smart. She’s fought so hard to not get attached; it’s not like she’d given it a name or let it inside her home. But sometimes she wakes up in her bed and and it’s there, watching her sleep with beady eyes, and then it settles on top of her chest and she’ll fall asleep with its teeth sunk in her throat and it’s going to snap her neck like she’s a bird caught its jaws and she loathes it–

Gregory’s right: Avi truly isn’t Zach. He’s a cat person. He listens to dad rock. He’s a total cinephile. He’s able to tell stories without getting totally off-track, yet somehow calls it endearing when Jacob does. He likes it when Jacob brings work drama on their dates and doesn’t let him apologize when he feels like he’s dumping a bunch of irrelevant information on him. He thinks it’s cute when Jacob has morning stubble. He’s not ashamed to introduce Jacob to his friends. He wants to go dancing– in public. The more time they spend together, the more he’s reminded that none of these qualities are remotely Zach-like. But, more importantly, they’re not Jacob-like, either.
Or: Jacob has to come to terms with the fact that he might, maybe, just a teensy weensy little bit be in love with a certain paramedic.

U good?He chews the corner of his thumb, contemplating how much information he should share. He knows Caleb still looks up to him; better to not bog him down with details of his poor choices. He manages to get a quick and vague “super hungover rn” out before his guts churn again and he has to resume the activity of emptying the newly ingested substance into the toilet.
Or: Jacob Hill has spent his entire life fixing his problems alone. But when something is undeniably wrong with him, his family shows him that maybe he doesn't have to be.

“There’s the coffee machine, and it’s broken more often than not, so I recommend you just buy it somewhere else. Restrooms, Janine Teagues’ (Senator’s assistant, you’ll meet her) office, my office, Joshua—”
“JACOB! For the last time, Ava, my name is JACOB!”
“—Hill’s office, the speech writer. And this…”
Ava pushes open the office door just in time to hear Barbara ask the recording technician “Is the mic still hot?”
At the shake of his head in the negative, she picks up a stress ball from her desk and flings it against the wall.
“Asshole!”
“And this is Senator Barbara Howard,” Ava mutters. She straightens and clicks her tongue. “Barb! Language.”

“Do you want any water?” the woman says.
But before he can remember how to answer that, loud footsteps start banging down the corridor outside the room. They skid inside, and a guy follows them.
