The Winter Soldier may be a living weapon rather than a person, but it actually is allowed to want things. It mustn't get greedy and make too many requests, though; Hydra is already gracious and patient with its outrageous demands for frivolous luxuries such as warm bedding or the privilege of squandering half an hour on "free time." It knows full well that it must pay its masters for everything above and beyond the necessities that they provide.
Or, 5 times Bucky sold his body to Hydra agents +1 time he tried to pay someone in the aftermath.

Rewrite of CA: The First Alpha, meant to be entirely from Bucky's perspective and a replacement for the fic I originally wrote back in 2020. This was for a series called "The A(BO)vengers" that I abandoned back in 2022. This series had six fics associated with it that I have now hidden. So if this seems familiar, that's because it is the same series/story with heavy rewrites.

He pushes past her and looks through the window. Inside, a man prowls like a panther, his face hidden by long dark hair. Steve’s first thought is operative. It’s in the roll of his shoulders as he walks, the black combat pants tightening over muscular thighs, the empty holsters strapped over his body. The man is all black in the white room and it’s shocking. His hands are tight fists, opening for a second before curling up again like paper in a fire. One arm is shining metal. He turns with his back to them and paces the other way.
Steve’s second thought is that this man is not just angry at having been caught. There is a jagged discomfort to him, like the different parts of his body don’t belong to him and he has to fight to keep them working together. It’s like he’s at war with his own brain. It doesn’t make sense, but after thinking dangerous and angry, Steve thinks hurt, and that word sticks to him in a way he doesn’t like.
The Alpha part of him yearns. Omega.

Summary
The Winter Soldier and the Reaper have successfully hidden from Hydra and Steve Rogers for sixth months after the fall of Project Insight. Bonded by trauma, the two partners fight tooth and nail to survive off the grid. Their success is wanning to a close as Lilith's health deteriorates and Bucky has to halt their traveling maneuvers. When their hiding hole is discovered, Bucky has to decide whether to trust an old face or to remain hidden with the offchance of Lilith perishing. Their memories are sketchy at best, Lilith's moreso, and their enemies are slowly bubbling back to the surface. Is the world ready for the discovery of the supernatural world? Are the Avengers ready for it? Can Bucky and Lilith reclaim their memories, humanity, and autonomy before there are enemies on all sides of them? Is Steve ready to face that there is more to the story with Hydra and their experiments? It's time that the Avengers decide to wipe Hydra off the mat for good, but there seems to be more heads attached to it than they realized. Bucky and Lilith's wellbeing depend on it.

Summary
There's a lot of expectation attached to Steve Rogers' name. It's taken him years to prove his own worth - that he's made it so far in the USNA on his own merit and not just because of his father. He's close though - there are only a few more months until he graduates and gets to stand on his own two feet. It's taken a lot of effort to get there, and a lot of sacrifices.
Bucky's beyond the point of expectation. When your father and grandfather have both been President - and your mother nurses political ambitions of her own - brilliance is a foregone conclusion. He's just counting down the final months of his confinement to the glass cage of the White House and he's determined to put that whole world behind him.
But as the days standing between them and their dreams dwindle, Steve comes to realize he might have made one sacrifice too many, and Bucky learns that his freedom comes at a cost he's never going to be able to pay.
