Summary
Hours later – after blood and guts and a life saved on the kind of Hail Mary that makes her brain sing – Jack Abbot turns towards her and grins. Arms folded across his body and his eyes more than a little bit wild; like the mess of it all thrills him the same way it thrills her. "I'd heard you were good, Mohan," he tells her easily, "but hoo-boy, was that something to watch."

On the fourth of July, before it gets too dark and fireworks start to knock the sense from the neurons firing in his brain, Jack Abbot walks out to the ambulance bay and slashes the tires on Robby’s 1969 Bonneville with his pocket knife.

Summary
When Samira decides to leave Pittsburgh, it’s because she wants to. Emergency medicine is her north star and, most days, her reason for getting up in the morning. Finishing her residency is an achievement she has worked herself to the bone for. It is the sum total of the legacy she forced upon herself when her father died.
Three days after Robby trades in his cross-country motorcycle trip for a less than voluntary psych hold, Samira stares down at the mobile phone in her hands. Scared and sad, and as sure about it as she has been anything in her whole life. There is nothing for her here anymore - maybe there hasn’t been for a while. She has made mistakes; sometimes those mistakes have cost other people their lives. She has cried, and been berated by the people who were supposed to support her.
She has stood on the roof of PTMC and breathed in humid summer air. Wondered if the world would be better without her in it; if it would be easier if it all just stopped. No-one comes to talk her down or pull her away from the edge; Samira Mohan rescues herself instead.
And when the HR director at St Michael’s in Newark calls, she answers on the second ring.

Summary
Samira has been feeling off for a while. Nothing specific – just a low grade, exhausted sense of wrongness pervading her body, slow and steady. She’s been successfully blaming her mom for this for the last several days. The revelation of a new marriage and world tour – the whole life that Samira herself had been imagining and sacrificing for ripped up in front of her very eyes. Surely, she thinks - ignoring the nausea, the dizziness when she stands up from treating a patient just a little too fast – she’s earned the right to feel a little less than perfect?
It’s an excuse that’s working well for her. Right up until, that is, she’s doubled over in chairs, vision swimming, and a sharp pain in her stomach that tears her breath away from her lungs entirely.
Through the haze, somewhere to her left: “Get in the fucking chair,” Joy says.

Summary
Samira knows that Jack Abbot, loopy from concussion and pain meds, will call her his best friend. Will tell her - eyes glazed and utterly, irresponsibly sincere – that she is the smartest person he has ever met; that he will give her anything in the world that she wants, all she has to do is ask.
Or the one where Samira Mohan asks Jack Abbot to give her a baby. Platonically, of course.

Summary
“He ran.” Samira says eventually, leaning her head back against the lockers. Her voice is small in a way that she thought she’d outgrown, unlearned somewhere between the start of her residency and the realisation that it doesn’t actually matter what Robby thinks. It’s all she can do to keep the tears out of her voice; cannot bring herself to pretend that everything is going to be alright, “I told him I was pregnant, and he ran.”

Summary
At twenty-five Samira Mohan gets drunk at the ACEP Scientific Assembly. Head full of dreams, in a city she doesn’t live in, a year before she starts her residency. Meets an older man who goes head to head with her on medical journals; talks outcomes and hail Mary’s and procedures performed in tents in the middle of gunfights. Feels alive, feels seen and lit up in a thousand ways that are extraordinary at the time (that she will remember, even years later, will wonder if she made up).
Samira Mohan takes a year out, has a baby. Reapplies for residencies closer to her mother, to her family. Keeps an eye out at every conference she ever attends for a man called Jack with salt and pepper curls and the kind of smile that has you believing in all the possibilities the world has to offer.
Never finds him.
At eighteen, Anika Mohan joins one of those DNA matching sites. Spits in a tube and wonders about the lives that might be out there waiting for her. Tugs on the red string of fate and hopes it answers.
An AU to 'of flowers, stronger than cement'.

Summary
She’s forty minutes into a conversation with the man, whose name is Jack and who is far more interesting than he has any right to be given the circumstances, before she notices he’s wearing a wedding ring. Feels her blood freeze in her veins, heart beat slow down then speed up in staccato rhythm that has stars jumping in front of her eyes. Cuts him off mid-sentence, “Anyway,” she says icily, “shouldn’t you be getting home to your wife?”
Or Emery Walsh and Jack Abbot hook up at a conference and that decision follows them back to Pittsburgh

Summary
Jack almost doesn’t pick up the phone. He’s living in the space between the last disaster and the one he’s sure is coming next: dark room, two fingers of cheap whiskey in his glass and a week of stubble that’s threatening to become a fully-fledged beard if he doesn’t do something about it soon.
Jack almost doesn’t pick up the phone, but he recognises the area code. Knows it as a physical thing, keys pressed down under his fingertips– all the carefully dialled Sunday calls home from camp and diner phone boxes on the side of the interstate and teenage love, teenage no you hang up firsts.
“Hello.” The voice on the other end of the line says, high and nervous, “It’s Emery.” She hesitates before adding her surname. Like he might not recognise the girl who grew up two doors down, his kid sister’s best friend. “Listen,” she ploughs on, taking his silence as an invitation to continue or possibly just needing to get the words out, like they’ll catch in her throat and burn up if she doesn’t, “Jess needs your help.”

Summary
The first time Parker Ellis meets Jack Abbot isn't in an ER or an ambulance bay or even in the city of Pittsburgh itself. No, the first time Parker Ellis meets Jack Abbot she's doing her biology homework at a fold-out table in someone's back yard; Fort Benning, Georgia, 2008. Half distracted by the crowd, little kids running around barely supervised and the scent of barbeque smoke wafting on the breeze.
"You've got your arteries mixed up there," he sneaks up behind her, voice genial as he gestures to the diagram of the human heart she's carefully labelling, open bottle of beer in his hand.
"Oh," she responds, looking up at him through her shades, nose scrunched, "You a medic or something?"

Summary
People often ask Jack why he joined the army. It’s natural curiosity, mostly – sometimes laced with a little bit of judgement, a little bit of why the fuck would you think that was a good idea? He usually tells them the truth, or part of it anyway.
Or the one where Jack Abbot is Emery Walsh's father.
