Summary
Charles starts pacing. He never used to, when he was alive, but thirty years and he's picked up all sorts of habits from Edwin. Edwin paces when he's thinking, but mostly Charles does it when he needs to move and there's nowhere to go. There's a pulse thrumming at the base of his throat, which is all kinds of weird. That only happens now when his body forgets he's dead; when it's reacting to something bigger than he is, base and animal.
"If it's an enchantment, then you can sort it," Charles says. "I don't reckon there's a spell out there Edwin Payne can't work out, yeah? We just have to find the right book."

Summary
Edwin hadn't explicitly said it, but the whole 'there's no time' routine and scary words like 'siphon' and 'fractures' don't leave a lot up to imagination.
Crystal can't imagine a world where a ghost getting all their energy used up means there's anything left afterward. Fuck, if Esther hadn't needed him as a long-term battery, isn't that what that god-awful machine would have done? Crystal's gonna find Edwin after this is all over and he's all healed, because she needs to smack the shit out of him.
She doesn't have many friends. She can't afford to lose any more.
OR
Edwin falls victim to a particularly nasty magical object, devouring his spectral energy from the inside out, starting with his memories. Luckily, he has a psychic and co-dependent best friend at his side. Less luckily, the only way for them to save him is to delve into his past, into memories from when he was alive, and of course, from Hell.
