Do you remember when there was a tomorrow? Commander Shepard does, but facing the prospect of the coming Reaper invasion, he's not sure there is one anymore. He's trying to keep a strong face for the crew, but inside he knows they're facing oblivion. So when Liara T'Soni, the new Shadow Broker, discovers possible evidence of a wormhole that might hold a connection to the Reapers, he has to check it out. Only to discover a brand new enemy that thrusts them all into a whole other universe where humanity is already on the brink of extinction. Now Shepard will be faced with choices that will test him and his crew, as they fight a battle that might already be lost before it even starts. There has always been something among the stars; hidden within the dirt, grit under hands long since grown cold. Tiny, trembling particles colliding to transfer energy to something leaking it. Something unnatural, forcing air into cavities and stripping away loose debris. Something Other.
You don't hear about it very much. Conduits of colour meeting the glare of the sun the same way biodome weather shifts, the same way a particle accelerator binds together chemicals compounds to create something new. A new equilibrium settles, hanging just outside of focus.
There are Things out there that aren't anymore - and to that, you have no answer for. Protectors, out amongst the clusters of cosmic events, keeping whatever It is from finding you. They ask not to be remembered but are in thick, black, bold letters burned into a rockface on Earth's surface.
Over thirty Spartans, Missing In Action.
