“I am sorry,” he says. “I am not trying to fight. I just don’t like the idea of you not being okay and me not knowing, even when I am in the same place as you.”
That Shane can understand. He wouldn’t like it if their positions were reversed, after all, if he thought Ilya was potentially in danger and he was in the next room over drinking champagne and making smalltalk. He sees Ilya go somewhere in his head sometimes, sees him retreat inwards, sees him check out even if his body is still there, going so deep inside that he doesn’t even catch Shane’s eye for a bit even when something funny happens, too far away for Shane to reach him.
But it’s also not like he can just go up and grab Ilya by the arm and pull him away from the party, not without inviting speculation and a whisper storm. He doesn’t have that right, doesn’t have that privilege, to potentially need Ilya or be needed by Ilya and be able to just pull him away.
It’s moments like these that Shane feels the weight of their secret like a physical thing.

Summary
Shane wishes that he could say he doesn't see it happen, but he does.
They've been on the attack in Edmonton's zone for nearly two minutes, and their opponents are getting tired and desperate. Ilya is in front of the net, right where Shane should be. Every player on the ice has been moving in and out of position, trying to keep their attack going, and he ends up by the blue line when Chouinard takes a shot that flies towards the goal.
Ilya shift to side in hopes of tipping the puck in, and an Edmonton defenseman lunges forward with his stick lifted in hopes of blocking the shot.
The puck rings off the crossbar, and Ilya drops.

He answered with no preface, no pretense, just the bare facts. “I'm at the hospital with Shane. He wasn't waking up for me.”
The line was quiet for a bit, almost long enough for Hayden to start thinking she'd put the phone down. When she spoke, her tone was serious.
“What do you mean, not waking up?”
“I got to Drapeau's place and tried to wake him up to get him in the car, but he wouldn't wake up. It was like he couldn't. And then,” he trailed off, unsure what to even say about what he found to his wife.
“And then what?”
He took a deep breath, reluctant to say it out loud, but he had to tell her. “I think something bad happened to him, Jacks. Like, really bad.”

Shane stands there quietly for a few moments, not wanting to burst this bubble. The past two nights with the Pike children have finally made him comprehend why Hayden was so pushy about him joining the parent club all those years ago. Shane didn’t understand it before, believing children, with their messy habits and chaotic energy, would never fit into his perfectly ordered life. But, seeing Ilya like this has set a million butterflies free in his stomach and now he gets it. He gets it a little too much because now all he can do is think of giving Ilya a baby.
