One moment he’s sitting at a now familiar marble table with a losing hand in front of him and the next he’s sputtering and choking on air as cold overcomes his limbs and forces him to jolt upright. Beneath his palms is the splintering of a cheap coffin six feet deep, rain is pouring into the dirt as mud puddles and pools around the base of the wooden box at the bottom of his grave, his hair is slick to his head. A laugh he knows by heart comes from somewhere in the vague darkness above, it’s someone he swears he recognizes, a purplish-red scar tearing a crater from his bottom lip up through his now glassy and gray left eye.
“Oh my God,” the man standing above him marvels, a wicked grin dancing across his lips. “It worked.”
