    Summary

Seven Years Ago when Tony Stark went missing in Afghanistan, his almost eight year old son, Peter James Edwin Stark, was placed in foster care. When Tony returned, it was to the news that his son had been killed when a fire had broken out in the foster home and only the neglectful caretakers survived the blaze.

Now, one year after Ultron and Sokovia, Tony Stark and Pepper Potts have decided to act as foster parents in an attempt to keep what happened to Peter from happening to anyone else. Of course, the spider-themed vigilante in town may make this venture that much harder. Can’t Tony just get a break?

Peter Parker has no memory of his life before he was 7. He’s spent the last seven years in foster care wishing nothing more than to find a forever family. He thought the Parkers were going to be that family, but an unfortunate accident two years ago left Peter and their three children once again at the mercy of the system.

When Peter fights back against his foster father, Skip Westcott, he and his foster siblings end up at Avengers Tower, Peter has to figure out how to hide his nightly activities and Tony needs to figure out just why this teenager and his dead son have so much in common.

Mission failed—Cooper glanced up and waved an arm like a magician completing a trick. “It’s Old McDonald himself!”

“Yuck it up,” Clint groused over his son’s snickers. “You’ll see who’s laughing when I finally get those sweet potatoes to grow bigger than a ping-pong ball.”

“You’ve said that for as long as I can remember.”

“This summer’s the year. I can feel it.”

    “Promises, promises.”

Clint looked around for a hair elastic to flick at Cooper when his curiosity won out. He rounded the swing to get a better glimpse at whatever they were bent over. “What are you guys doing?”

    “Drawing some animals,” said Cooper.

“Creating an abomination,” said Pete quietly at the exact same time, sending Cooper into a reluctant fit of laughter.

“It’s not that bad, Pete, honest.”

Clint twisted his neck to see the sketch pad. A furry blob with angry eyes and lopsided teeth roared out from the picture, a counterpoint to Cooper’s serene frog on a lily pad, nigh photo realistic in its proportions. “It’s uh…it’s supposed to be a lion, right?”

Pete sighed like a defeated soldier. He crossed both hands near his chest and flexed his fingers—‘It’s a bear.’

Cooper stifled another laugh. He offered an eraser from the pencil case between their hips and Pete went to town on skewed lines around the…bear’s…ears.

“Oh.” Clint squinted one eye. “You know, if you look at it from the right angle, you could make a case for a polar bear.”

    “No, you can’t.”

“No,” Clint agreed. “You can’t. But if you tell people it’s a lion, they’ll never know the difference.”

Cooper didn’t even look up from his shading this time. “Farmers don’t get to give artists advice.”

“Umm, excuse me?” Clint placed a mock insulted hand on his chest, hamming up the tone when it made Pete smile. “Did you not see the sunset portraits Nate and I painted last month?”

“My point exactly.” Cooper sniffed. “Also you smell. Mom’ll never let you at the supper table in those clothes.”

Just for that, Clint drew Cooper to his chest for a sideways hug, topped off by a classic noogie. Right into the dirt spot on his T-shirt.

    “What, you mean these clothes?”

“Ugh! Gross, Dad!” Cooper shoved at Clint’s chest to no effect. “Up close, you really smell.”

Clint released him with his own laugh, especially when Cooper leaned into the hug, not nearly as put off as he pretended. Pete eyed the banter with a timid sort of amusement. He kept drawing, but Clint spied the glint of his eyes taking it all in. Puzzled yet absorbed in the moment.

    Bookmarker's Notes

She gave Tony a swift hug, then pulled out her phone. Learning from previous experience, she then jumped to the ceiling and sat down upside down. Far too many of her phone calls had been interrupted by various Avengers when they got frustrated with Wade’s pet names, and manner to talking.

“Baby boy!” His delighted voice brought a smile to her lips even as both Tony and Steve winced, then shot her phone a dirty look.

“Wade, privet lyubov’ kat ty,” she greeted him.

Bucky had been teaching her Russian. One of the few languages Wade spoke that most of the other Avengers didn’t. Natasha wasn’t in the room and Bucky both liked Wade and couldn’t care less what they said to each other.

Both Steve and Tony turned to Bucky, but he refused to translate. Jarvis, also on Peta’s side, found himself unable to comply. Peta smiled down at her dad as he and Steve muttered sourly away to each other. She knew the blushes that covered her cheeks as she listened to Wade sweet talk her were only stirring the two men below up, but didn’t stop them. She wasn’t forcing them to watch her as she talked with her boyfriend. If they didn’t like what they saw, they could look elsewhere.

Wade was more than happy to come and ‘help’ the Avengers. He didn’t have any contracts at the moment and had been itching to un-alive baddies. He promised the two of them could go out for a roof top picnic when he came back.

Peta could feel herself smiling helplessly. It might not sound like a romantic date, but for the two of them, it was filled with nostalgia.

    “I’ll like that,” she agreed.

The rest of the team had assembled and boarded the jet that had landed on the roof of Stark Tower. Deadpool had come, risking serious injury as he kissed her through his mask, in front of the team.

He was in the jet annoying Hawkeye and talking shop with Bucky.

Tony was the last to board.

“Make sure you take Jarvis with you,” He fretted.

“I will Dad,” Peta agreed amicable. Jarvis and Karen both went with her on her nightly patrols. Ready to alert the entire team should any untoward trouble crop up.

“I promise to just do a quick sweep and then come right back home. Jarvis will keep you updated with my progress.”

“Indeed, Sir, Little Miss is in excellent hands.”

“I know, I know.” Tony wrapped an arm around Peta, drawing her in for a hug. “I’ll stop hovering, I promise.”

“I don’t mind.” Peta understood Tony’s fears. After all, she was going to be checking in with Jarvis on Tony’s status the entire time he was away on his mission as well.

It would take time and healing for both of them to relax their hyper vigilance regarding each other. Something that against all odds, trials, and events, they now had.

Tony was Peta’s Father, with Jarvis, Karen, the Avengers and Deadpool making up the rest of their family. She had everything she could ever want and more.

Peta truly was one lucky Cave Spider.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Abe’s nightmare raccoon, which had been quiet (somehow reading the room better than Flash) chittered and raised its paw in a salute like gesture.

“I think that means we’re in.” Abe said, no one questioning the fact that the raccoon appeared to have human levels of cognition (and spite). Whatever, New York was a weird place. There were probably rats doing Shakespeare and differential calculus in the sewers somewhere. If she saw one, she’d probably just ask for help with her homework.

Ned was looking at her. She jolted out of her rat-based reverie and masterfully suppressed her meep of surprise. “Of course! You know I can never resist a scoop, also, y’know, whatever you need Ned. Me, helping? It’s a date, well, not a date, hahah, just-”

“Ooookay. Well, what she meant is, We’re all helping. We’re the Midtown Acadec team. We bully criminals, go to Denny’s, and we’ll take down some murderous organizations too.” Cindy, blessed Cindy, saved her from her rambling.

MJ blinked, and Betty couldn’t ever remember seeing such a vulnerable expression on her face. “T-thank you guys.” She murmured, and steeled herself. “Don’t think this gets you out of practice, though. We’ve got State coming in 8 weeks, and we are going to crush all of their bones, and eat the dust of their skeleton-“

Betty smiled, tuning out MJ’s gloriously murderous speech and looking at the strange little family (complete with a raccoon that was currently pickpocketing Flash) around her. Yeah, they were gonna crush some HYDRA bones. For MJ, Peter, and Ned. They deserved a family, and they were going to get one.

    @@@

Oh! It’s really great. Normal high school stuff. We won nationals this year. My uh, parents keep showing up in increasingly elaborate disguises and only Flash noticed, which was hilarious. We went to Denny’s again, and we all try to hang out outside of school as much as possible. Umm, Flash got a bunch of Youtube followers, he’s up to 83 now. Don’t tell him, but Ned and I made some bot accounts to uh, pad the numbers a bit. I finally reached an armistice with Abe’s raccoon, Cindy blew up our chem lab right after it was finished being reconstructed and I think that’s what sent Mr. Harrington into nervous breakdown number two. I think Ned and Betty are dating? There’s a lot of-“ he narrowed his eyes in distrust “giggling.”
