“It looks like some sort of… infection,” Applejack mutters, eyeing the unconscious stallion in front of them. Luckily, he wasn’t that hard to sneak up on, even though Rainbow Dash felt more sluggish in the air than usual.
Rainbow Dash grimaces at the blood and goop coating his fur. Even now, as he lays still, it looks like his limbs are stretched to a painful degree. Up close, she can see the more unnerving features clearer. Like his muzzle, slack and filled with a mouthful of unnaturally sharp teeth. The skin around it is black, and when Rainbow Dash tears her eyes away, she instead locks onto the unconscious pegasus’ wings.
It looks like the feathers were dyed with ink, similarly to the skin around the stallion’s mouth. They look frail, almost weak, and are hanging limply at his sides. Her own wings shuffle nervously at the sight. “Look at his cutie mark,” she decides to point out instead. Rather than the typical, colorful cutie mark that all ponies eventually earn, the only thing on the stallion’s flank is a black silhouette of what might’ve been a book. It’s surrounded by similarly dark skin. “It… kind of looks like what’s happening to the moon, right?”

Out of instinct, Gilbert pulled his jacket across his chest a bit tighter. He was not a fan of the cold. Out of all of them, in fact, it always seemed to hit him harder. Why, he didn’t know. It just did. It always did, and it always sucked.
