The beginning of the Industrial Revolution brings whispers - subtle and sinister, like shadows seeping from its many smokestacks - not only of incredible progress, but of pragmatism; efficient uses for its sizable population of magicians. Performing silly tricks is a marker of time gone by; they must channel their magic to a cause worthy of their talent. (Elementalists and Mechanists wanted! read signs in the factory windows.)
Underneath, however, Yang perceives the truth: Magicians, like her and her sister, are threats which must be controlled. But she doesn’t expect war until she meets a girl with one clawing at her shoulders.
